Will regular automotive paint hold up on the engine block? I would like to paint my block a custom color, not the standard high heat in the can and wonder if you need to add something to regular paint or what? I have seen blocks painted on the TV shows, but dont recall them doing anything special. Dont want to go to the trouble if if is going to fail due to the heat or whatever. Help wanted!

Try Dupli-Color engine enamel, they have a ton of colors available. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/engine.html

Yes modern catalyzed auto paint will hold up real well on an engine with a little discoloring on the heads around the exhaust flanges.

Most of the street rod guys around here are using base/clear to paint the blocks, heads, intakes and almost everything else on the engine. I've seen a few of them after 20K of driving and they still look great.

I painted my motor and it has 20,000 on it and it still looks wet :-)

Eastwood high-temperature ceramic engine paints -comes in quarts you can brush it on or spray---I put mine on with a brush it flows right out no trouble.

Yes regular automotive paint will work fine. Clean the block very well, strip old paint off, paint with GOOD epoxy primer (I prefer Southern Polyurethanes brand primer and clears), let it dry, shoot your base coat and then clear. Pretty simple and it will last for a very long time.

vht is the best imo. I have it on my headers even and it seems to be holding up fine

Yeah, this is a bit old..........:smileyb:

OK, now that we are here.......some years ago I painted a 400 with Linear Polyurethane that I use on airplanes. It was Alumigrip, made by US Paint. Not a good idea. I believe the engine ran a bit hotter with that stuff on it. It's not bothered by high temp as far paint burning off though. It's a thick tough coat, which is likely why it seals the block too much.
