I tried the search and couldn't find anything, but if this is a re-post I appologize.

Does anyone know where I can get some real good reference material for Blueprinting engines that would be easily read by someone who is a novice when it comes to engines. I do know enough to keep my Elky out of the shop, but not enough to work in one...

I just pulled an '85 454 out of a truck this weekend and I've got ideas on what I want to do, but I want to read up more before I start. I've done a Google search and I keep getting the same results. They all sound good, but I was wondering if anyone had read any of these and which of them could be easily followed...

Thanks in Advance

It's good to read and understand the intricacy's of engine blueprinting, but keep in mind the basic clearances as noted in any good shop manual are the important things.

Since I take it you will be building a street engine there's no need to get caught up in engine blueprinting to the extent that a race shop has to. High end engine builders have to completely square the block, align bore the crank and cam, etc., not practical or needed for a street engine.

Primary concerns are bearing fit/ piston to cylinder fit(clearance)/crank and rod end play/valve guide clearence and a few other items any good shop manual will detail.

Tom Wilsons book, "Big Block Chevy Engines" , although a little dated now with advances in cams and heads from the aftermarket, is a very good reference for starters.

It's not expensive, give it a read and you will know more than the average joe!

David Vizard also has some good books on small block GM building worth reading as well.

Thanks for the tips, I will definatly check into that... My Elky won't be a daily driver once I get the 454 in it, but will be a weekend warrior that I plan on taking to the track to mess around every once in a while. :-D
