Alright fellas, here it is so have at it. I am open to all suggestions. I have got an 82 Elky with a 4 barrel 305, computer controlled and needs to be smogged. Recently, I felt the need to do some upgrades: Edelbrock manifold and camshaft with lifters, pushrods, World Product heads, timing chain and sprockets, distributor cap and rotor, Edelbrock headers, and a remanufactured Rochester Quad. I finished up the project about a week ago and still can't get it to start. It cranks, sparks, and timing is right on. I feel like I have tried everything!! Please help, my baby is hurtin!!

If you do get it started, how are you going to get it through a smog check now?
About the start problem, if you do have gas, recheck your timing. Many people will install a SBC distrubuters 180 out.

Thanks for the suggestions!! But a couple of things, all parts are smog legal so that shouldn't be a problem and about the gas, it is most definitely getting gas. I have even sprayed starter fluid down the carb hoping to spark something, but nothing. I'll re-check the timing. Thanks again!!

I do not want to appear as a dumbass, but, I assume you have reconnected the mixture control solinoid on the e4me? Unless the computer gets a signal back the engine will not fire, or has been my experience. When you turn the key on does the solinoid click for about 10 seconds? If not, it is not working.

I would never spray Ether or starting fluid in anything but a diesel, I would be careful using that, You could have more of a problem if that was to misfire and blow the pan off the bottom, It should try to start on its own, Do what Pops said and then check and see if your not out 180, easy mistake to make, and easier to correct.

timing is def. off if you got starting fluid in there and it dont pop or your vavle timing is wrong or both

There is something I got at the parts store that I have found to be a real life saver when doing diagnostics. They sell something about the size of a pin and when you put the end of it near a spark plug wire every time the current flows through the wire the light on the tool will flicker. That being said is sounds like a timing problem to me. I also agree with previous statements that using starting fluid isn't a good idea, if it doesn't start on it's own than starting fluid isn't the answer.

Tied to user starting fluid once to start a boat I once owned (inboard, small block chevy). Blew the exhaust outlet clean off. As for the original problem, don't overlook the obvious. I once re-built the engine in my wife's Merc. Bobcat (basically a Pinto) and couldn't get it to start. Had my dad, who was a diesel mechanic, and had worked at one time as a line mechanic in a Ford dealer, look at it. Had us both stumped unitl I realize that I'd wired the distributor backwards (wired it for clockwise rotation but should have been counter clockwise or vice versa..can't remember now).

By the way. I'm not suggesting that anyone would do something as dumb as what I did, just saying don't overlook any possibility.
