If you mean the 4th Gen Monte brakes they not only fit but are identical. All the GMC G-Bodys have the same brake system so you can't upgrade your brakes by swapping in brake components from another G-Body. I'm pleased (almost astounded) that such a young fella is asking about improving the brakes and not asking about how to install twin turbochargers. There is hope for this new batch of hotrodders yet.

8) Kind of a change huh? Someone wanting to make sure they can stop before making it go faster! Sounds like a youg fella with a good head on his shoulders! Thats what is great about my youngest sons (twins), they always run their ideas past dad first also their friends ideas although their friends tend to not take suggestions from an "old guy".

:) Welcome to the site 78driver!

You've got to be careful with the 78 El Camino as it uses different rotors and different outer wheel bearings than all of the other 5th gen El Camino so a direct swap of some of the 81-88 Monte parts isn't possible. The caliper and pads are the same.

personally i hate turbos on v8s and i hate nitrous on anything.anyway my el caminos pushin 420 HP, its fast enough. and since i put new suspension on it it handles really great so since i live 15 min. from the blue ridge pkwy, i decide to go for a blast in the mountains every once in a while. which made me discover that my brakes start to fade fairly quickly. hence my desire for new brakes. whats the biggest rotor i can stuff into a 15in. cregar ss?Ive really been looking at the ssbc brakes, thay seem like good stuff and theyre not too terribly expensive. when im done with performance upgrades when my wallet recovers im gonna redo the interior(28 yrs in the SC sun has taken its toll on my car).thanks for your help guys.

why?my dad gave me the car like that i havent put ANY mods on the car at all.but hey i can drive through my town without ever touching the gas. im actually thinking of ditching a few ponies because in the rain (and sometimes when its dry)when it shifts gears, the rear wheels like to spin a little, doesnt scare me ,im used to it, but if i ever take my girlfriend out(or go somewhere with a friend) in this car itll scare the fire out of her, and my friends, when that happens

Why do you have the curb idle so high?

i didnt set it my dad did i havent done ANYTHING to the car i typed it wrong about the suspension my dad put new suspension on the car before he gave it to me. this car is exactly the way it was when my dad gave it to me. i really need to tune this thing down before i get myself in trouble. as it is im not allowed to drive through downtown(even though the officer did think it was funny that i set off 3 car alarms at one time)but i like the way it sounds so ill just stay out of downtown.anyway thanks guys for your help.dont look down on me for having a fast car its not my fault.i make fun of my friends for putting speakers and gigantic rims and other stupid "mods" like nitrous( i tell them theyve just turned their car into a dentist office on wheels and ask when they can schedule me in for a root canal)so yeah at least on my part there is still hope for this generation and the next because my (hypothetical)son will be the same way

If you're looking to "tune down" your car i'll swap you my 305 for yours and call it even  . as for the brakes, i'm looking into upgrading as well(I don't know too much about them, I'm also 16). I've read that ceramic pads are supposed to be better/longer lasting with less fade, but i'm a while away from that upgrade.

i know my scanner doesnt work but my car looks like stevus' 79 el camino on page 3 of member cars except mine is essentially an ss clone and has cregars and a rear "nascar" style spoiler. i find it ironic that his car also has SC plates

I live near Albany, Ga. Around here brakes are very vital, not that we have mountains or anything, but because people can't drive.

you should see the people in atlanta, everyone is on a cellphone and not paying attention to the road. I had a fedex truck pull out infront of me monday during a light rain which had pulled all the oil up out of the road, that scared me to death when that car just slid on that wet oily asphalt (and this was in an abs car, the pedal was going nuts)

Part of the reason you're burning your brakes so quickly is probably your insanely high idle (which would also be ruining your transmission). Ever hear of a neutral drop? Someone revs up in neutral and shifts into drive with the RPMs up. These are insanely bad for transmissions and you're pretty much doing it every time you shift out of park. You're also having to hold back 25 mph of RPMs every time you go to a stop sign (imagine that you were driving 25 in a normal car and instead of letting your foot off the gas to slow down before stopping, you keep your foot down on the gas pedal and press the brakes at the same time. this is what is you are doing right now in your car). Your idle should be just enough past stalling for it to run smoothly. If it has to be high enough to go 25 mph to run smooth then something is *very* strange with your tuning.

He is right about your idel being way to high. If you don't know how to correct this yourself then you need to go and talk to a mechanic about it. I am guessing by the way that you described the car the pervious owner put in a cam that is a little beyone stock. I am not sure if they put in something a little to agressive (like a full race cam or something) and now to make the car idle it has to be at a high RPM. In any case you need lower the idle way down or look into replacing your torque converter with one that has a stall speed above your idle.

You also need to be careful out there, if you are driving a car to the point where you are worried about brake fade you are beyond the point of being safe. If you want to drive fast like this you should look into auto cross or other auto sports venues and not be driving like this on the streets. You Will be really sick with yourself if you wreck this nice car and loose your lisence doing it.

You said a mouth full!!! Lived in the area since 1990. Where I'm from, we are required to take drivers ed in high school. In the military we were required to complete Drives Improvement. Here most people don't know the rules of the road or just choose to ignore them.

that's about how mine is. it was a tu-tone blue true "Conquista," but i got it painted about a month ago, and have been putting it back together since (my sinature is true). blue with silver Chevelle SS stripes and cowl induction. not too hard to spot.
