Hey, I need tranny help asap please.....I have a 1967 Chevrolet El Camino with a TH350 tranny out of a 1976 Firebird and a Invader 350 small block out of a 1971 Blazer......today when I went to take the elky out of the garage it slipped when I put it in reverse :? . so, being the newb I am, i didnt give it much thought....Well, later on when I went to move it down the driveway it didnt feel right when I was shifting down through reverse to neutral and then to drive...I didnt actually "feel" the tranny shift through reverse and neutral, only in to drive...I decided to drive it down to the end of the drive way (for no reason lol). Once at the end of the dirve way i proceded to shift it into reverse...only to realize that I nolonger had reverse!!!! 8O ...the shifter shifted but the tranny did not. :-( I was like "this isnt good". So i figured I would just go forward 8) ...I mean, who wants to go backwards in life, especially when you have an el camino right?? WRONG!! 8O My life long plan of "dont look back" was tragically shattered when I realized that drive was now gone too  .................... Soo, please I need any advice that will help me figure out whats wrong with it...Is it easily fixible or would I be better off just getting another tranny and ifso, what gears should I get in the tranny?
Please, anything said will be greatly appreciated...

Okay, this is the weird part....if I check the fluid it says that its really (and I mean really) overfull....almost double what it should be....and it doesnt look right. down near the tip of the stick its kinda a silver/greyish color mixed in with the normal red.....what does this mean?

it means the bands are worn out, time for an overhaul

Thanks for all your help, it means alot....I need this car on the road asap....sorry for being such a newb but what exactly are transmission bands? and does that mean that its repairable or should the tranny just be swapped for another one? Thanks again

You did check the fluid level with the engine running and the transmission warm and in park---there is no way for the tranny to make fluid so it had to be put in there or you misread it-----your problem sounds like the classic low fluid or dirty filter starving the front pump so be sure you are checking it right..........................Dan

I agree with Dan. Be positive about the fluid before you do anything. If the fluid checks out, drop the pan and see what you have in there. A clogged filter could create pressure problems as well. In answer to your question, a band is a circular metal strip with a friction material bonded to it. It encircles a metal drum, and when tightened/applied, it grabs the outside of the drum. If the friction material is worn down it will slip. They are replaceable however you usually run into other things that need replaced while you are in there, so you would be looking at an overhaul.

Okay, thanks guys....I'm going to clean it out first and change the filter and the fluid and see where that gets me...I just got the car and this is the first time i've even checked the tranny fluid (I know, not very bright of me wait until its too late  ) I swear that it reads that there's too much tranny fluid in it though....I was wondering if its possible that its the wrong stick; Maybe too long of a stick causing it to read wrong? I mean, i'd like to know whether or not i have enough tranny fluid in it to begin with.
Thanks,
Jacob.
