Hey
My tilt steering has a bit of play in it . Does anyone here know how to fix it or what part needs replacing?

Here's the link to the most accessed article on this site Fix Loose Tilt (http://elcaminocentral.com/article95.html)

The article that the link takes you to is a good start. If you are good at taking things apart and putting them together, you can do this. It is NOT an easy task. I did my steering column on New Years day, ALL day long. Print out the article, and all the photos. If you click on the photos you can get a bigger version. Print those as well. Have them handy in the garage with you.
Get a digital camera that can take close up photos and a note pad. Take photos of each step as you take it apart. Make a drawing and take lots of notes. There are several special tools you will HAVE to have. There are a lot of small strange parts. When you get to the bearings, all the ball bearings just fall out as soon as you pull the bearings out. You get to search for little steel balls all over the floor board and up inside the dash if you are not careful. It is a lot of fun trying to get the bearings back into place with all of the balls in place.
Take your time, lots of digital photos and lots of notes. That is why it took me all day. It is a great feeling to get it all back together nice and tight and 100 percent right.
Good luck!

On the inside of the colume there are 4 bolts and they back off you need to get down to them use locktite and screw them back in. You will need a wheel puller and another tool to press down the plate so you can remove the clip to get to all of it. If you need any parts your local dealer should stock them mine does.
Good Luck

That reminds me of one more tool you will need, the inverse torx socket. The 4 bolts that back off are shaped just like a standard torx tip, so you need a inverse socket. It is not something I had in my tool box before. You also might want to look into the pin puller for the tilt function. I tracked down a Snap On truck and the dealer knew exactly what I needed. You might be able to find them at a local auto parts store but sure could not.
