Number matching cars with have the VIN derivate stampe on the engine block, body, frame and the trans case.

Engine block is in 2 possible locations, on ledge in front of RH head (pass) side. Also the engine date codes will be there and that should match with available engines and have date preceeding the built of the car. The engine code is always here, a 2nd location for a CON VIN is on the vertical rear flange of the block, up from oil filter. Note-This area is not machined like the front pad and that makes it very difficult to find it.

CON VIN like this'
8L123456 or
18L123456 (1 is GM Div; 8 is year; L is assm plant; and 1-6 should match the last six of your VIN along with the year, plant and GM division matching)

See if you find these and we can go into the trans and body location next. The body one is hidden by the heater box and cowl trim. The trans is on the left side. Once u find the engine one you will know what to look for on the harder to find ones.

NOTE - These are hand stamped with metal dies (about 1/4 in) and not raised numbers that were cast in at the foundry.

If you have any doubts about what you find or want the engine decoded, post all the info. Tip-Check everything thoroughly as these are often misread. So save yourself some agravation and clean the area good and be 100% confident you have them accurate. These are number and letters and I's and O are often used as numbers.
