Hey guys..I am looking at doing an aftermarket stereo for my '84 elky.

What do you suggest to fit an aftermarket headunit in there? I am tired of Casettes!

I've found some nice 3 1/2" speakers for the dash, and some nice behind seat 4x10"s

I need some suggestions for an amp (if needed) and a head unit...and how to put it in!

for a receiver i'd look through crutchfield for a model. anything in there is gonna be really nice, and i'd select something with preamp outputs so its easier to hook up your amp (even if you don't want an amp now its better to get a cd player with one incase you change your mind)

for wiring , a wiring harness would be the quickest way to install one. they're worth the money.

for an amp its gonna depend on what you wanna run (subs, 4x10's, etc)

Infinity perfect 5.1 components in the kick pods, infinity kappa 6x9s in the rear in custom holders I made, 2 infinity 12 dvq in custom box that’s under bed strapped in, kenwood excelon x969 deck, kenwood 1600w 601d amp pushings subs, and kenwood 640w 4ch amp pushing mids and highs. Sounds pretty killer with the kenwood SRS WOW soundstage on.

if you want pics of the whole install, email me at jon@effit.com and i can give you tricks/tips etc. maybe even toss you my custom box dimensions 8)

will a single din fit fine in the dash? Sure, with an adapter bracket sold in most chain electronics stores. But why not look for a Delco (non Bose) unit from a late model GM ? Less modifications...

go to your nearest salvage yard and look for an DELCO radio w/CD from a 94 up GM (Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick) vehicle. try to find one with the CD in the same unit as the radio (some GM vehicles had the cd seperate from the radio). like 87SS said make sure the radio is not made by Bose (unless you want to do more modification). Bose stereos would be more common in vehicles that are closer to 99 and up (99 sse bonnieville for instance). hope this clears things up a little. BTW, a little tip. if you do get a stereo from a salvage yard, also try to get the plug that fits it.

yea, like that. that is what you want to look for. you might have to swap your radio plate for one out of an 87 MC/Elcamino SS. that year used the din size radios.
