The fuel guage goes way past full when the power is on. Sits at halfway when no power. It just happened about 1/2 hour after filling the tank so I am hoping its something easy(dont wanna take the tank out). Wiring???
I have no power from the distributor tach (hei distributor). The tach goes up about 200 rpm and stays there when the power is on.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Typically when a fuel guage goes way past full, there is a loss of ground for the sending unit. My old '77 Elky had that problem. I ran a self tapping screw through the seam lip of the tank and ran a ground wire from that screw to the body to get the guage to read properly.

 Makes perfect sense to me!
AND it will save me from taking the tank off, which I didnt really want to do!
Thanks muchly!

Ok. I ran a self tapping screw through the lip of the tank to the frame AND to the body with no luck.
The fuel guage still goes way past full as it did before grounding the heck out of it!!!!!
I guess I'm gonna have to take the tank off.
Unless someone else has a suggestion?

Ok. I took all the advice given on this forum regarding guages and tanks and tried what I though was all of them.
I took the tank out and checked the sending unit with the ohmmeter.
It was supposed to be 90 ohms resistance avccording to the sending unit itself.
Nothing.
Two days of head scratching and playing with it always got me the same result.
After checking the wiring for the umpteenth time and determining that it appears to be good, I decided to cut the wire at the fender harness tucked into the drivers side quater panel and check the power from there.
I ran a new piece of wire from the power source behind the clearance light and a new ground wire.
It worked! 8O
Lesson learned?
I suppose that a wire on a resistance for a fuel tank is low voltage anyway and that a poor wire can still put enough power through to fool your ohmmeter!
New wires for power and ground and it's back in tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help (all the items in the electrical forum for fuel guages) from everyone.
