I was planning on just doing some things to my 305, but i have come across some unexpected money and I'm thinking of just going for a 350. I'm not planning on getting anything to strong, probably a crate engine between 250 and 300 horses. Now I'm just wondering, my car is an 84 el camino with the 305 and the 3 speed auto trans, now here is the ?. Could the trans handle it? or would i probably be stuck looking for a new one? Also, what major things will i have to get extra that are not interchangable between the two motors? Thanks a lot for any information, all is recieved with welcome arms.

the tranny should be able to handle it as long as you aren't rodding on it everywhere.

are you going computer controlled? if your not then a new carb, and distributor.

might i recommend a gm goodwrench 350?

If i do it, i'll get a goodwrench, seems to be the best idea. And I plan on staying away from computers, so i guess a new carb and distributer are something i'll have to look in to, thanks for the help

I installed a Vortec crate motor last year. The price of the motor was about half the cost. Besides the carb & distributor you'll need a harmonic balancer, water pump,flex plate, intake, headers or cast iron replacements, oil filter adaptor, fuel pump and rod, spark plugs and wires, new motor and transmission mount. If your're going to retain the computer you'll need a Spark Control Module and a Knock Sensor for a 350 together with a custom chip for the computer. You probable should replace your cat with a high flow replacement. It sounds like a lot but in the end it's worth it.

if you choose a crate 350, all your parts needed can be used from the 305. and the 350 transmission will work great with a stock 350 engine. if you choose to have the tranny rebuilt. you can build it up better than standard .it then will handle some lead footing. TMHO worth what you payed for it also
