first, welcome to the site, second arrange to obtain a truckload of money, third, have fun. now, try pushing that gate in as you try to open it. my 79 do the same.is the handle going up all the way?. play with it, if it is not bent bad or have visible damage, it may be a matter of "getting the hang of it" last but not least,HAVE PATIENCE. THIS CARS CAN BE TEMPERAMENTAL SOMETIMES. and since you just got it, it may be trying to establish control. nothing that a little love and care will not solve....

WELCOME :o

remove the four bolts on the inside of the tailgate, and remove the tag holder. look inside and see how everything moves, and fix it accordingly. it is a good idea to shoot WD-40 or PB Blaster in there before you put it back together.

Thats a sin :P . Use Tri-flow or Kroil but make sure to put some White Lithium on all moving parts when done. Thats one thing I cant stress enough use a good lube. Growing up you would never find a can of WD-40 in the garage. You use that stuff on things you dont care about.

WD-40: Water Displacement Try number 40
Not made to lube rusted parts, it just works temporarily. But will dry your dist cap if wet.

WD-40 is wonderful stuff for what it was intended and several other things but a permanent lube---it isn't................Dan

It's not as good now that it's not flammable. Used to be, a can of WD and a bic lighter was a cool flame thrower. It was also handy for troubleshooting a no start. Shoot a little down the carb and you had a clue about, no spark/no fuel.

I'm pretty sure its still flammable. I think pretty much anything is an aerosol can is do to what they use for pressure. On the topic of flame throwers nothing beats a Super-Soaker fill with gas and a blow torch taped to it :)
