: Somebody should have warned me about the Spare Tire
arkay 10-27-2003, 12:20 PM As part of checking things out I decided to check the spare tire for air. It was empty and easy to pump up as I have a compessor. That is the good news. The bad news is getting Humpty-Dumpty back together again. What I am talking about is the jack. I am clueless on the purpose of the bracket just behind the driver's seat. I kind of foced the jack up against it. Yes, I did RTFM and the picture is useless. I don't know if I really trust the bumper jack so my Aligator jack is now riding in the storage area.
One other question. How much air should be in the air shocks with no real load in the rear?

The only thing they're good for is taking up space in a dumpster...I'd pull'em and get a nice set of coil-overs or maybe an air bag supension set-up.
Hansmanbo 10-27-2003, 03:23 PM I used to run 100 psi in my shocks. Wasn't high enough for me, so I trashed them. Now I have coil over shocks and Airlift 1000s. Great clearance for my 275/60/15 T/As  p.s. Trash your stock jack and get a cheap floor jack. Laying it on its side will keep it in place.

I have a small Aligator jack and it fits in the storage area. I would hate use the POS bumper jack.
Thanks!
BTW, I was running 32 PSI so will have to kick it up on the air shocks. May change them some day but right now have higher priority items in the queue.
427chev67 11-17-2003, 04:01 PM The more air you run the higher the rear is. also the rougher the ride. I run mine at about 40 psi. It rides a little rough but sits good and I am always hauling on short notice. As for coilovers, airbags and such they're nice if you can afford it but for my driver I run Moog variable rate springs and Monroe airshocks.
Deluxe Edition 12-26-2003, 05:53 PM I reallly like the air/lift air bags. as sold by CCC But I went one step further.
Rob the air ride controls and wire harness from a wrecked 1986 Fleetwood Cadilac one relay and a light indecator and it's automatic forever.
If you need the wiring diagrams and some help on how it works drop me aline I have all the GM factory Elcamino and caddy books for 1978 to 1986.
I luv how mine works it's self leveling to whatever you set it to.

That's the advise i took! You can pick up a 2 ton floor jack at wal*mart for less than $30 anytime. :)

I don't think I'd want to trust my Elky and maybe my limbs to a Chinese POS jack from WalMart. IMO.

Hansmanbo 12-31-2003, 07:38 AM WOW! Whatever! :?

But you would trust the stock GM bumper jack??? http://www.jeffpylenz.com/INCREDIMAIL%20VOL.2/DAILY/kopfkratz2.gif
83Elky 01-03-2004, 09:09 AM Didn'y say that. I've a great American-made scissor jack I kept from a car I had in the long distant past that serves me well.

Deluxe Edition 01-03-2004, 09:42 AM  I Shopped in the salvage yard. I am Not sure what it is But I think ita Geo Tracker jack with all the ground affects,I found it worked best
Tommy 01-04-2004, 12:23 PM My 78 came with a great working GM scissors jack. :) I have several Nissan scissor jacks that I use around the house & of course a 2 1/2 ton floor jack.
Deluxe Edition 01-04-2004, 02:22 PM I mixed and matched the jack tools. I confirmed the jack as Suzuki and it also used in Toyoda Camery, It's crank handle is a mid 80s chevy truck its a long fold up thing. that I fixed to hook into the jack so you can slide it under and out from under the car easier.
A real plus with the ground affects.I tried to do it like GM would have,on theRoyal Knights.
If they had thought of it. .

Whatever; I was just expressing my opinion about general material quality and workmanship. Glad to see that you use jack stands. Like a surgeon, though, one failure with a jack by itself and you could be taking a long, long dirt nap.

Tommy 02-25-2004, 02:44 AM Always use jack stands. It doesn't matter how good your jack is. 8-)
JOHNSUBR 02-26-2004, 12:15 AM please dont ask about a lug wrench
