How do you get it off. I have a 1973 with a floor console shifter. I am trying to get the carpet out and have to remove the console. I can't get the shift knob off by just unscrewing it. It is the type with the button in the center you have to push to shift the auto trans. Any help would be appreciated. It is probably simple.

Thanks for looking.

My first car was a 77 chevelle with floor shift. If I remember I twisted & pulled up at the same time. After a while it came off.

I have been trying to twist it (really hard). I can't get anything to budge. I am thinking of just replacing the tranny and/or getting rid of the worn out factory console and putting an after market on it.

I guess if I do that I will twist until something comes apart.

If anyone knows or can confirm this let me know. Maybe I just need to get the WD 40 out and spray the underside of the knob.

Thanks for the input.

If I remember correctly, the floorshift knobs in that era were secured with a horseshoe type clip.

Look at the front base of the knob carefully. See if there is what appears to be a piece of metal wire there. If so, stick a small screwdriver in behind it and pry it out.

It should be a U-shaped piece of wire. After you get this out the knob should lift right off.
When you're ready to put the knob back on secure it with this same clip.

thanks for the u-clip tip. I will check. That makes sense.

If it has the clip it will be on the front side of the knob which is the back side as you sit & look at it. It might be hard to notice.

I didn't have my flashlight on me last night. I will check it out and report.

Thanks again for the tips. I need to get all that out of the car to replace the floorpans and then the carpet.

OK, In case anyone needs to know. The shift knob was reverse threaded and screwed down over the shaft of the shifter. Then there was a u clip that could be removed which freed the shift knob to be removed from the shaft. Free at last. I am going to abandon the counsel for a B& M shifter. Which one is best?

Wow, I have never seen a auto shifter knob screwed on.

Yes that was kind of weird. But ultimately there was a spring clip holding it on. The knob must have been threaded on the clip or something now that I am thinking about it.

Thanks for the advice.

Once the knob is removed, is there any other hidden fasteners to remove the console? I too want to replace my carpet.
