I have an 85 el camino with a 305 and a 400 turbo tranny setup i recently bought from a guy that had changed out the stock tranny. but i am not sure if he changed out the engine too? are there anyways to tell if its a 305 or 350 just by looking?because ive heard that having a big tranny on a not so big engine can slow you down.but if it is a 305 is it still ok to have the 400 tranny on there?any info is greatly apreciated.

i believe the dipstick is on the left side of the block (passenger side) for the 305 and the right side for the 350.

th 400 is overkill with a 305. The 400 is for high torque engines. It takes around 20 more horsepower to run a 400 over a th350.

i checked and the dipstick is on the passenger side so its a 305 and as you said that its overkill then would any engine mods improve that or is it best to just get a diffrent tranny?
