I've gotta totally dead power steering pump and I'm tired of fighting the GMC to steer so I'm going to swap it out for a new one question is How difficult is it to get it off does the pulley have to come off before the pump can be removed ??? do I need specific tools for removing the Lines to the gear box basicly what alls involved in this I love my Caballero but not the Work out I get just trying to steer it

The only special tool you'll need is the one to remove the pulley from the old pump so you can install it on the new pump. This tool should be fairly easy to find (I got one from Manny, Moe and Jack). Other than that, it should be a matter of disconnecting the lines and un-bolting the old pump and reversing the procedure to re-install the new one. Oh yeah, bleed the system. I believe the procedure for this is to fill the pump, start the engine and turn the steering almost (but not fully) from lock to lock until you get all the air out of the system. Trust me though, it's well worth it to get your hands on the tool to remove the old pulley (don't ask me how I know).

Ah Cool thanks for the heads up :D is there anything specific to bleeding the system like leaving a line loose or is there a bleeder valve this is the first time I've ever had to do this on any Vehicle but it won't be the last I'm sure :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

I just replaced the PS pump on my '80 Elco. As stated before, the only specialty tool that you will need is the one to remove and install the PS pump pulley. You can usually rent them from Pep Boys, CSK, or other auto supply stores. When you remove and replace the PS lines to the pump, you will want to use a line wrench as opposed to an open end wrench. If you don't have a line wrench, I'm sure you'll do fine with an open end wrench.
When you go to "bleed" the PS pump, it is best to jack up the front end of your car so the front tires are not in contact with the ground (less stress on the PS pump during the bleeding process). Start up the engine, leave the cap off the PS pump reservoir, and cycle the front wheels back and forth by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock. This will get any air out of the system.
