: Rochester Quadrajet problems
I have been waiting more than a month to get a book "Rochester Carburetors" by Doug Roe from Amazon. Now they say delivery estimate is next week. I can't wait anymore! I wanna drive my Elcy every day, now!
The problem is nobody here in Estonia wants to mess with Rochester Q-Jet. So the only way is to fix it by myself. Actually i haven't repaired any carburetor so this is my first-one.
Right now the temperature here is around 0 degrees in Celsius. It is very hard to start the car when the engine is cold. So I found that that plate (choke plate?) was missing. This is not my carburator, but it looks like it.

So might that valve cause hard starting problems and hesitation until the engine is totally warm?
theelcaminofactory 10-31-2003, 10:42 AM Oh yeah! Question is, why is it missing? That's your choke. If it's not there it will make your Elky hard (actually damn near impossible) to start in cold weather. I'll bet that's not the original Quadrajet on there or someone was monkeying with the original and removed the choke for some unknown reason. What year Elky do you have and what year engine is in it? Is the engine stock? This would determine if you need an automatic, electric, or manual choke and possibly finding the right parts to solve your problem without spending a lot of money. I hope we're talkin Estonia New York, and not where I think your talking about, because if it's the Estonia I think your talking about, it's gonna be difficult to find those parts your gonna need to fix this problem! :(
It is the Estonia you're thinking about, so yes, parts will be difficult to find.
Here's another option:
Edlebrock Carbs (http://www.martelbros.com/cgi-bin/store/ws400CS.cgi?store=EDE&cart_id=1031031014017777&page=edelbrock/carb_square.html)
Just throw one of these boyz on and you're ready to go...
My Elcy is '74 an carb is '73. Carburetor looks exactly the same as in the picture, but only this choke is missing. I can see there holes where it has been in. I didn't take it off, previous owner did.
I thought I will make this choke by myself from a sheet of metal. Let's see what comes out..
theelcaminofactory 11-01-2003, 08:14 AM Jez, there is an ECC member in Luxumberg by the name of Klaus (Xtreme Camino). Klaus is pretty sharp and has a beautiful Elky. Maybe he has the parts you need laying around his shop or knows where you can get them. Luxumborg is close to Estonia isn't it? His website is www.elcamino.rockcrawler.com PM him and maybe he can help you.
Thank You theelcaminofactory, I'll keep that in mind. If I can't repair it myself I'll contact Xtreme Camino.
theelcaminofactory 11-02-2003, 07:53 AM Your welcome my friend.
hillbilly 11-22-2003, 11:50 AM Jez,
exactly the same thing on my -76 el camino classic!
Some previous owner probably removed it. I heard
that those choke-plates often closed during driving,
causing irritation, making people remove them.
If I find a plate on a junk yard camino I'll take it, if
I find two, I'll send you one.
Most people say I should let go of this crappy carburator
and buy a Holley or Edelbrock instead.
If you machine a plate, please let me know how it's
working and I might try it myself.

greasy5thwheel 11-22-2003, 04:47 PM send me a pm with your address and i'll pull one off one of my junk carbs and send it to you. as far as i know the plates are the same. if you let me know which choke, electric or heat riser, you have i'll see if i have one and send it too. may not work but at least it would give you some parts. shouldn't cost that much to fedex but don't really know about. guess if you will, check it out and let me know. hope this helps.
