: Rear view mirror with lights in a 77

First of all let me apologize if this should go in the Electrical topic, this was a marginal call.

First of all I have a 1977 El Camino that I'm slowly building back into a decent daily driver. The engine is done now, and I'm fixing up the items that are necessary to pass inspection.

The original rear view mirror was forcibly removed from the windshield by the previous owner and I want to replace it. Since I'm not trying to restore this car to it's new condition I thought it would be nice to install a rearview mirror from a later model car that had the reading lights in it.

I went to the local boneyard and pulled a mirror and wiring harness from a newer GM. So now I have it ready to install. I know to power it I will need one constant hot wire - easily enough taken care of. But I'd also like to tie it into the circuit that activates the dome light.

My question is this.

Do any of you know the routing of the wire that goes to the dome light on a 77 El Camino? Obviously depending on it's routing will help me determine the best place to tap into that circuit.

I figure it would be easier to ask here, than to start pulling trim pieces off on a wire chasing expedition and any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm doing the same thing in my 82. Don't know if this will help but the wire in mine was in the driver's side A-pillar.

Thanks, I'll check there. Hopefully they're similar.

Not sure if the wires run up the drivers side A pillar on a 77, they probably do, but if you can't find them without ripping out the headliner, drop the dome light, and tap in there, then fish the wires under the headliner to the windshield.

That was one of my fallback positions.

Thanks.
