: I put the 76 on the track Friday Night.

I finally decided that it was time to see what my 76 would do. Its heavy and has the slowest rear end gears in the world but I wanted to see. We went to the track Friday for some testing and tuning on the Roadster we've been working on. I was playing chase car for it most of the night. We had some not so bad runs and found we needed to jet down the NOS feeds on it.

So anyway about 11 PM just before the track was starting to close I decided to see just what the Elky was going to do. I lined up behind the roadster, and waited my turn at the lights.

First time I jumped the lights. I ended up with a 10.202 @ a flimsily 63.21 MPH. Reaction time was -.485 :D. 60 ft. was 2.321. Really shabby!

Second time around R/T was 1.066, 60 Ft. @ 2.392 to end with a 10.610 @ 62.21. Really lousy if you asked me. I did better when I missed the lights.

So now I am in the market shopping for a new set of gears. I am also going to take the top half apart to check out some stuff and I plan on retarding the Cam about 2 degrees. We set it t the specs that Comp Cams said but it is just not optimum yet. I should be pulling somewhere around high 8s to very low 9s.

I think I was having some fouling in #1 and possibly one other cylinder. I also need a hotter set of plugs. So I have some general tuning to get worked out before I try again. And we have some of the same on the roadster to take care of still.

ElkyPete,

What are you running in your '76?

I take it this is an 1/8 mile not 1/4 mile track based on your E/T and your MPH? Otherwise sumtin just don't seem right with the E/T compared to the MPH. :)

ElkyPete,

What are you running in your '76?

I have a 383 in my Elky. Its got a small Cam (Comp XE268), Edlebrock RPM Aluminum Heads (Second Generation)64 cc, RPM Air Gap Intake, 1.6 Roller Rockers and KB Pistons at about 10.5:1 static compression. I have a set of DynoMax Shorty Cerma coated headers and 2.5" Exhaust that was not uncapped.

According to DD Dyno I should be pushing around 380 something horses with exhaust hooked up. I haven't played with the cam timing just yet it is set to comp's specs but it can use being a little retarded or at least that is where I'll go after I get a new set of ass gears.

I am not completely unhappy with its performance. I have had this engine in it since about April/May of this year and it is just getting to a point where I feel like I can exercise it some.

I've got a THM 350 Transmission and a B&M 2100 RPM Stall converter. Which hopefully by this time next year it will be a 200R4 or a 700R4 and a custom made torque converter that will flash at 2500 RPM. I don't like this B&M it was their cheap line converter and its a piece but it is good enough to have cut open and remade.

My 78 el camino with a '74 400sb, with an edelbrock intake and carb, otherwise stuck ran 15.83 @ 90mph. The combination of street tires and a peg leg rear with airplane gears netted me an amazing 2.82 60 foot time 8O. If i could get this thing to hook, i think mid 14s would be possible. I had a great time at the track non the less.

ElkyPete,

Thanks for the info. Remind me not to race you. Luckily for me I know what yours looks like.

BTW: What track do you take your cars to?

There is a track less than 5 miles away from my home. I can stand on my porch at night, on the weekends, and hear the cars. It is in Kennadale, Tx. Lone Star Speedway or something like that.

Its 10 bucks to get in an race all night long. The owner take her VW on the track about closing time. Its pretty comical to watch it a New Bug and she runs it with the top down. it pulls like 21 in the 1/8th. :D

They had a 5th gen there that was pulling low 4s in the 1/8th! Everytime it came off the line it was on two tires. It was Blue and man it was fast! I'd guess it was a Big block or on gas. Talk about a fine automobile! That is one hell of an engine.

There was also a really nice Prostock Vette that the guy couldn't keep striaght on the track. It was doing low 3s to high 2s. It looked to be a 80 something.

It was fun. Man I can smoke em up at the box. I loose all my RPMs when going from first to second. I never made it to high gear just not enough room.
