Hi, a 72 el camino owner here. I got my EC just as it was headed for the crusher, it was trashed, it had no engine no tranny, glass only in the rear window and no bumpers or right fender. I rebuilt it as original as I could afford. Put a 4 bolt main 350 in it with a Th350. that was 14 years ago. until recently i used my EC as a everyday driver/ work truck. Now it is time to refresh/redo my el camino and i am glad to find this site. Jerry

Hello Jerry and welcome to El Camino Central. Sounds like you found out alot about El Caminos the hard way 14 years ago. When I get involved with a new project I search here first and the rest of the web second for information.

Are you now doing your 2nd resto ?

What city are you in?

Thanks for the welcome. When I got my EC I had to go around and pick the brains of all the old-timers I knew and read a lot of catalogs and books. I had just finished restoring my 1965 suburban so I had some background in restorations.
I am only trying to make my EC a dependable ride again for the time being .I'm thinking about maybe trading it for a more modern ride. I've seen a early 80's EC for sale in a nearby town I may see if I can afford. I live in Sedona, I grew up in Phx.

Parts are easier to find for the 80's version...(5th generation).....than perhaps the 72 you have however, there are a number of companies in California that sell parts for your Elky.

I like to get to Sedona when I can however, I have not made the trip in a while.

We have 2 members in Prescott that write comments and questions here in Division 15 although, I haven't seen anything from them in a while.

I'm fairly sharp with 5th gens. I've done considerable work on my 85 and my son tore up an 83 a few times, afterwhich I put it back together about 3 times. When we got to # 4 I said I'm done....you can now drive a Honda

Well he saved his money and now has an 86 that he is proud of and since he grew up a bit and bought it with HIS money he treats it with alot more respect.

Anyway.....whatever I can do to help you just let me know.

Welcome aboard JKINAZ. Sounds like you have a real treasure there. Craigslist.com has quite a few 70's El Camino's posted in the auto area for sale. Tons of parts I would assume. Check it out.... there's a guy in Chandler that has a 70's for 500 bucks.... that's a steal

Good Luck

Thank Sy ! and a Happy New year to you too.

Did you do any Elky work over the holidays?

I had a set of Accel plug wires on mine that I decided to replace last January....yep....last January so I figured since I bought a new set of OEM wires I should at least put them on in the same year  .

What I difference it made, runs like a bat out of hello! Can't seem to get my idle as low as I would like though. I pulled the IAC and cleaned it today however, that didn't get me down low enough, it either idles too high or dies, I'll figure it out....... hopefully before 2007 is ending

Did you research those vacuum lines?

Yip. I was able to get alot done. The more I did the more I kept replacing. Replaced the windshield on Thursday and was able to get all the emissions hoses I needed but have not challenge it yet. Complete tune with wires, cap, rotor, all new hoses, belts and shocks.

Now the radiator is leaking... So time to pull the old and add a new one.

There's a savage yard in AJ on Meridian who has a few 80's elkys with plenty of usable body parts and trim.

Sat around on Monday and drooled at all the killer cars on Barrett Jackson.

Check with you later

jkinaz,

Welcome to the site. I'm down here in what I consider the armpit of Arizona. Boy would I love to give up Yuma for Sedona. Anyhow, this is a great site-very informative and some great folks. I have an 87 which I have modified quite a bit over the years and a 78 that is all original that I saved from the wrecking yard. I'm not sure what my plan is for it at this point. Anyway, welcome aboard and enjoy the ride.
Mike
