They sell some stuff in the Auto Supply called Bug and Tar remover that works great.

I suppose if your washing the car / truck and don't have it but have the WD 40 you could use it. Older - late 80s or early 90s clear coats and non-clear coats (Acrylic Enamels) I'd worry about spraying WD 40 on.

A couple of weeks ago I was trapped on a one way limited access road next to a highway. I was unlucky enough to be there right when they were repaving one lane. The man running the tar machine had that thing on turbo mode! Tar was running like a river across the only lane left. It was impossible to avoid. Even at one half MPH I got a nice thick coat of tar along the bottom of my Elky. There was a nice over-spray on the doors as well. I was rather upset but there was not much I could do except cuss. There was a long line of traffic caught in the same mess.

I went to the car wash with a pocket full of quarters. Hopefully the grease trap caught all the runoff. I had a can of bug and tar remover that I used up. I then attacked it with a large can of WD-40. I would spray all the tar let it sit for a couple of minutes, then hit it with the high pressure wash. Rinse and repeat, and repeat again and again. It took me over 40 minutes and several dollars in quarters but I finally got 99% of it removed.

Then I drove home and had washed the entire Elky. I got out my clay bar and cleaned the paint, and gave it a through wax job. I had been planning on waxing it again anyway so this was just a real good reason to wax it.

The inside of the fender liners up front and the frame behind the rear tires still have a thick coat of tar but I just don't care, the paint is clean.

Ultimately I would rate the Bug & Tar remover about equal to WD-40 in dissolving the tar. I could not see and damage to the paint at all. Since I had both cans on the shelf I can't tell you which was the cheapest. I would not make a trip to the store to get Bug & Tar remover if I had WD-40 around already.

I would have had to get out and seriously cuss someone for spraying my car!!! :x I don't care what it "Seemed Like" they had to do they could have opted not to spray people's cars and waited for traffic to clear a little.

See that is just rude, crude and socially unacceptable behavior.

8) They can be held responsible for any costs associated with cleaning it off. I made the state of IL. pay when they got yellow overspray on my car. I was sitting 3rd at the light and the truck goes right along side the whole line of cars. I got out and looked and sure enough there was paint on the car. The lady behind me strted honking cause the light turned so I pointed at her car and she gets out and talk about pissed off. She had thick yellow overspray down the whole side of her new black STS Cadillac! :(
