hey i just turned 16 and me and my dad have been lookin for a project car i realy like the 68-72 el caminos my dad doesnt realy like 68s and 69s because of the front bumper and grill he had a friend back in highschool who had a hugger orange 70ss with the 454 it had a fiberglass bed cover on it so thats the sort of look were tryin to go for i was wondering if the front clip is interchangeable for a 69 to a 70 because i seem to be able to come across more 68,69s then the 70-72 would it be better to wait for a 70-72 to come along? im in the macon area so if you have seen any in a yard somwhere let me know thanks

Hey m
1st of all, welcome to Region 7. Not a real active corner of the el Camino universe so it's always great to see a post here.
Secondly, as you may have noticed, all 3rd gen elkys (68-72) are the same from the doors back. And yes, you can swap it for a 70-72. But if you can find a decent front clip it's probably attached to a decent body. And even though it looks like a later 3rd gen, it's still a '69 and would be registered that way.
My 2 cents here...hold out for what you and your dad really want. There were more '72s built than any other 3rd gen and they're actually not that hard to find. Me, personally, would not change a perfectly good '69 to a '70-'72. If you don't want it the way it is somebody else might.
Keep looking. Be patient. They're easier to find than you think.

Welcome Matt. I know it's hard being picky, especially at 16, but my preference in 3rd gen would be a 70 with a big block, sorry, I'm just hooked on the BBC :-D
I'm wrapped up in 4th gen, and several other types of projects. But I say, go where your heart desires, you'll be happier in the end.
My first ride was a 56 2dr chevy, never got it on the road, but had a lot of fun working on it (that was back in the ............hmmm, never mind  )
Good luck, and get in touch with JJ73, he's in the Macon area.

Hey, welcome to ECC! I'm 16 and live in Albany. I dont know how much of a "fixer upper" you're looking for, but there is a SS 350 71-72 for sale here. the body is pretty bad, and the guy wants about 9,000 for it, but you might can get it at a much better price. I can get u more info on it if your interested, but it's pretty rough.

lol big block 70 is way up there with me to lol umm how rough is it my limit is 4000 for a driver and lower for a major project it needs to be runnin when we get it we can make it drivable we just need to hear it before we buy it(me and my dad are inexperienced in engine work) i have every intention on doin the work myself with help from him and friends ect i might get a buddy to paint it though i dont mind doin alot of work but my dad might freakout if its to major and leave me to work on it alone (stop funding) lol so were takin longer to find a better deal il need a smallblock(its one of my moms limits for our project) we definately want a v8 so im thinkin 350/383 my dads thinkin 305 for the sound but low performance i guess id be happy w/either i must admit ive seen more chevelles in fields than 3rd gen el caminos it may be that ive looked for them for longer then the el caminos sorry the post is so long lol thanks for the help
