i installed an edlebrock carb and intake just 2 days ago, after i finally got my 305 running again it seems like everything is going wrong and i cant firgure it out. First it was spitting gas out of the filter, i fixed that when i realized the timing was off 180. After that everything seemed fine until i was comming back from drivin it down the block, first the exhaust lost its deep rumble sound and turned into a hiss, sounded a lot like it does when you got a vacuum leek, so i tapped the pedal a coupe times and started losing power. Now, its wierd cuz sometimes it will start and sometimes it wont, when it does and you tap the gas it makes that same hiss noise when you give it gas then dies. I noticed its burnin oil and quite honestly i think it may be blown for the most part, if anyone has an idea i am all ears

do you still have the computer controlled distributer? if the timing is correct, it may be a vacuum leak, ,but I'm not very familiar with the syptoms. I knkow you can check by either listening around the gaskets with a hose, or by squirting a little oil around the gaskets and see if it is sucked in (if you don't mind oil on your new intake).

BTW, I like the username 8) .

sounds like a vacuum leak...if you have a EGR check that as well gaskets can be leaking or the valve it self is loose. Could not be properly torque too. Check the gaskets for the air and fuel and vacuum lines using starting fluid...spray on the base gaskets, EGR Valve, vacuum lines and when the engine idles better you know what to do. The loss of engine oil is a different story. First figure out where its going...Is it leaking onto the ground..if not where is it going? check your coolant to see if the oil floated to the top...plus once you remove the radiator cap you'd be able to see oil deposits on the cap.

I agree with snaggletooth on all except the starting fluid. Use carb cleaner instead, that start fluid will start a fire!!

Off key - when I lived up north during the colder months we used to hang out back at the garage and stand around the burn barrel keeping warm, shooting **** and drinkin beer. We had some empty starting fluid cans and tossed them into the burn barrel for fun. WOW Well if you have an empty barrle and full starting fluid can you can see a 20 ft fireball!!!
keep it safe!

Starting fluid is what a Automotive book has said to determine vacuum leaks...Carb cleaner does the same thing and is just as flammable. To start a fire while doing mine and my friends regualr "ghetto camping" I used Fuel Injector cleaner and saw a giant flame! Needless to say it didnt start the fire but it had a BIG flame! haha

A trick that my grandfather used was a small spray bottle, mix 50/50 liquid soap and water. When the leak is hit you'll hear a difinate difference in the engine . When your done just hose the soap mix off the engine and you may also remove some road dirt/grease.

Do you still have the catalytic convert? Sounds like it is stopped up impeding the exhaust flow.

It sounds like a stopped up exhaust to me too. Unbolt the pipes at the manifolds and see if it is the converter or a collapsed pipe. I'm am old timer from back when they used double wall exhaust pipes and it was fairly common. Pipe looks perfect on the outside but are closed off internally. I made several good buys on vehicles because the owners wouldn't believe that was the problem.

Broken baffle in the muffler will do this. I second dropping the exhaust from the manifolds and firing it up.
