The motto is go big or go home, can anyone give me some advice on how to squeak big, wide tires under the rear wheel wells of my 78 and how big might i be able to go or should i just go home. Thanks

ive fitted a 245/45/17 in my rear with a funky backspacing on them and had plenty of room for a fatter tire. you can probably go like 265 or even 275 if you wanted. Go to a reppable tire shop and they should be able to put a measuring tool to see how wide they can go for you. Plus your wheels will limit how wide you can go too. So MY best advice for you is to go to a reppable tire shop and see what they can do for you. Thats my experience from working at a tire shop and getting customers what they wanted no matter how ridiculous the choice was.

i was told that i could grind off a couple of inches off the frame..... but how safe is that?? is there any thing else to do as well?

If a tire shop is telling you to cut your frame you need a new tire shop!!!!!!!!!!
Do a search for frame replacement and see how many people have had to replace the frame because of rusting into or just part out the Elky.

I think that all Elkys can fit up to 255s on the rear with no problems, IF they have the right wheel. I've seen a 4th gen with 275s and no rubbing problems. I'd like to squeeze 295s into my 4th gen, but I expect to need a panhard bar (or maybe a watts linkage) to keep the rear axle centered.

It's called notching the frame, and if done correctly and reinforced in other ways, is perfectly OK to do. It involves more than just grinding the frame. Even with rolling the wheel well lip and notching the frame, it will still not give you enough room to stuff a 15" wide Mickey Thompson tire in there. To do that you'd have to back half the frame (with tubs) not just tubs. If you roll the lip and notch the frame, you could probably have enough to get a 10" wide wheel in there, depending on the backspacing of the wheel. The Pro Street look is pretty cool even though it's old hat now...it ruins the handling of the car as far as going anything but straight line...and if this is your daily driver, I sure wouldn't recommend doing it...it's for guys who have more than one toy to play with.

I have on my elcamino 275/60's on a 15x8 rim. no clearence issues. Have done know modification to anything, but does have some heavy duty springs in the rear. This is on my 84....which really doesn't need such big of tires. But it did help with cruising on the highway lol
