I am thinking about swapping my 3.8 229 engine for a 1994 vortec 4.3 with cpi, was wondering what all i need to modify for this to be done...wanted to convert the engine to a mechanical carb because it would be easier then switching to fuel injection. It would be hooked up to a TH350, do i need to get new bellhousing or anything?

The 3.8 and 4.3 use a different bolt pattern on the back of the engine. The 4.3 uses the same bolt pattern as chevrolet V8s.

76_GMC_Sprint,
he says he has the 229 version which is a chevy bolt pattern on the bell housing instead of the 231 Buick based engine, since it is a 305 with two cylinders missing as opposed to the 4.3 which is a 350 with two cylinders missing everything ought to bolt right up the only real differencies is the 4.3 will have the serpentine belt pulleys and brackets while the 229 will have those for v-belts. which ever you decide to use make sure you use the correct water pump for that application because they spin backwards to one another and will cause overheating and engine damage if the wrong one is used................Dan

awesome, so i dont have to swap out my transmission or bellhousing or motor mounts right? And what all do you have to modify on the engine to put a carb on it?

You just need to buy an intake that works with the new style heads and is set up for the carb of your choice.............Dan
