Perhaps, but that wasn't the question asked.

You are right, Let me ask it again for you. Have any of you young men and women building your first car or you old folks with more money than you need ever try one of those 2400.00 fuel injection systems?

When you reply please give your age. I'm interested in the demographics
of are elcamino owners

Ill play, Tim. I'm 52 but don't have more money than I need, however would never go 2.4K to replace the carb. There are some EFI systems out there that are less money. Tempting but not quite enough to ditch the carb just yet.

well I have decided to never own a car with a carb one day longer than I have to and this is pretty for a resto-rod or something but a little pricey for me too...I would sure like to see one in action though...........Dan

Dan,
Went ahead with the EFI conversion, it took a full 2 days for the complete installation and was very pleased it started right up with just a click of the key. The weather has been wet lately so haven't had a chance to drive it too much but it does run smooth and more responsive. One of the best features is the self tune feature of the engine management system, just drive the vehicle and the fuel tables will calculate automatically. Now you gotta like that!

Well I see why the price is up there. That is one sweet looking unit. Please give a report on how it does out on the road when you get a chance.

Jim,
The weather cleared this morning so got in about a 30 mile drive. Cold starting is better than any carb I've run, hit the key and it's running, RPM is 1100 when cold. Acceleration is smooth and clean with no hesitation. After it warmed up I drove around at different speeds to let the EMS calibrate a little more. On the way back, we live out in the country so there is no traffic, I tried a full throttle launch. INCREDIBLE power and as smooth as any late model car. Since the linkage they use is a 1:1 ratio all four barrels up together which probably accounts for how smooth it performs compared to a carb(no bog or secondaries kicking in). So far I'm impressed.

Checked the installation instructions on this EFI. It can't be used on emission controlled vehicles. :( Doug

I just learned that Professional Products will be selling a version of the Retroek speed system that will have a cast EFI unit rather than billet. No price yet but I'm told it will be cheaper.

Have you driven enough miles with it to tell how the fuel economy will be?

Jim,
I never really calculated my fuel mileage before changing over so I wouldn't have a basis for comparison.

Jim,
I never really calculated my fuel mileage before changing over so I wouldn't have a basis for comparison.

So I'm guessing there's not a noticable difference then?

The reason I ask is I'm all about driving my elky so anything I can do to improve the milage makes since to me, as long as it's not cost prohibative.
I know a guy with a ramjet 502 that gets extremely good milage and that has me considering some form of fuel injection for the future.

Thanks!

I only drive about 2-3000 miles/year and with a built 396, Turbo 350 and 3.42 gears it's not a high miler at best of times. There are different fuel profiles you can download from their site. I tried a race profile for awhile and it was pig rich( running about 12-5) but ran like a bear, just before the winter set in I changed over to a street profile, the spark plugs are now a nice tan color again. This base profile runs a 14-1 A/F ratio for idle, cruise and light loads ( and you can tweak it more with a laptop if you want) but as you drive the EMS will adjust the fuel tables based on the VE and apply the changes. I was talking with one of the owners yesterday and he told me I can set an appointment time with them, hook the laptop to the EMS and through the internet connection they can advise you on your settings and help dial it in! So in other words they can read your fuel tables on-line in real time.
So to answer your question I can't say what the impact would be on your mileage but you certainly have more tunability with it than any carburetor.

I really dig fuel injection and I had a Holley Commander 950 multi port on my 70 Chevelle. It cost $2900 but it was multi port. Throttle body injection works well but is not quite as efficent. I do like the fact that it looks like a Holley carb. Did it use the factory type fuel lines? I wonder if it would work with the functional cowl induction on my 70 SS Elky? I mean $2400 is spendy but have you priced a new 850 Holley double pumper lately?

Yeah what year car is that? It looks in the pic like you have a 69 style fuel line with the filter. What fuel pressure does it run? Maybe 15psi? I really like that idea since I want my car to look original (somewhat) but the fuel injection does interest me. I was wanting to do a LS1/2 in my Chevelle but that setup looks slick. I could see a 454/6 speed with that fuel injection.

The Elky is a 1980 sort of back dated with 70's styling. The fuel lines are something I fabricated when running the carb set-up, the filter is a late model GM EFI filter similar to a stock AC filter from the 60's, everything simply transferred over to the EFI. The system operates at 45 PSI so rubber lines are out.

Oh man, why did you post this? Now i really want one! I don't have any money, though. Oh well, I guess I'll have to suffer with my Edelbrock 650cfm til I win the lottery or something  . Looks like a pretty sweet set-up man!

My plans include rebuilding the original 400 that came with my elky. That's about 5 grand just to build the long block the way I want. I'm going to convert it over to Port Injection as TBI has many of the same limitations as a carb when it comes to fuel atomization. I want finer control of the fuel.

We've got an Accel DFI system installed on a 69 Firebird. It's a TBI setup and works really well but it was hard to get tuned mostly because it's sitting on top of a pontiac motor instead of a Chevy. Seems the guys at Accel forgot that Pontiac motors spin the distributor opposite the way a chevy does. It's a complete system and controls the distributor, fuel pump, etc just like an OEM system. Cost lots of bux though. About twice what they want for the kit mentioned in the original post.
