I had a stuck thermostat that changed into a two week project. So here's my questions:
1.What happens if you don't lubricate your rockers with S.A.E 90 gear oil when you replace them?

2.I've got my engine put back together and when i try to crank it, the crankshaft turns but the engine doesn't even attempt to turn over and my carburetor pops. Any ideas what it could be?

3.Were there any tips or anything special i should have done when putting back on my intake manifold, distributor, carburetor, or cylinder heads?

Thanks in advance.

1. have never used 90 weight on rocker arms. They are lubricated by engine oil when the engine is running so that would seem like what to use. New parts might get a dab of assembly lube.
2. Could you have installed the distributor out of time? That could create your symptom.
3. Not knowing your level of experence, if you are not sure about something, consult a manual on the subject. There are many references available.

your distributer may be 180* out of time

Like Canted, I have never used or heard of using 90 wt on rockers for rebuild. Either a special lube for the purpose or your break-in motor oil.

Your distributor is out of time. Recheck your installation, recheck it again, and hope you got the cam timing chain right (If you went into it).

Let us know.

Take care.

Did you start off with piston no. 1 in top-dead center position? Check your manual to find out how to do this.

Thanks for the help so far. I turned my harmonic balancer and set it to the TDC mark and adjusted my distributor so that the rotor was pointing to the no 1 sparkplug but my engine still didn't crank.

That idea to use S.A.E. 90w gear oil came from my Chilton repair manual for my car. I've been trying to follow that during this rebuild. I think that's part of my problem.

I also replaced my carb while i had everything apart could this be the problem?

When you set the engine to TDC (Top Dead Center) to install the distributor, make sure it's on the compression stroke (i.e. both intake and exhaust valves closed on number 1 cylinder) otherwise, you'll be 180 degrees out of time and could get the sympoms you describe.
