: Door Replacement
Hello Elky Fans,
I have a 75 Classic, great interior, excellent drivetrain...poor body, I need doors both, totally trashed. Does anyone know from what year to what year I can interchange doors with, for Elkys and Chevelles. I am having a difficult time finding replacements for them.
Thanks For Any Help..
Tom

Iceman 03-09-2003, 09:56 PM You may need to locate another 4th. generation El Camino to donate it's doors, I have a 3rd. generation Elky (1968-1972) and their doors are totally unique, doors from 4-door cars or station wagons will not interchange. I'm not familiar enough with the 4th generation Elkies to be able to tell you if any other bodystyles are suitable donors but I do know that replacement parts for 4th gen. are the hardest to come by. I hope you find decent doors, good luck!
Mizer 03-10-2003, 05:55 PM i feel your pain. been looking for a 75 left quarter for approx. 4 years. im ready to sneak out with a chainsaw one night. 8O where do you live?
86 el camino Hwn styl 05-06-2006, 06:34 AM I've been looking for doors for my 86' for at least three years. no one on line at any of the stores has been able to help, or maybe its a conspireacy to keep these doors from us, maybe we should be cautious about who we talk to about this.
John Harris 05-06-2006, 07:20 AM Help is on the way for you 4th Gen owners! An auto parts manufacturer in Connecticut is in the process of making door skins that are expected to be ready in just a few weeks. As soon as they notify me that the skins have arrived from the plant in China, I will post an announcement here so you can check them out.
If we can send them enough new customers for those parts, the company will be happy to gear up and do the 5th Gen door skins, which I believe will sell like crazy since so many of us need them and GM has not been at all helpful.
86 el camino Hwn styl 05-06-2006, 07:40 AM tell me about it, I am willing to pay an un-godly amount of money for new doors. I've been shopping all over the place and if I could find new doors I would pay as much as $1k each to have them, but no one does. you would figure that so many of us exist that they would manufacture these parts. If I had the money I would, as I'm sure the investment would pay huge dividends. anyway, now that I've vented. thanks, I would appreciate that.

Hey Tom - welcome to our 4th gen misery.... :?
Exactly how bad are your doors? We just finished up restoring both of our '77's doors, both of which were in pretty bad shape.... passenger door damaged on the outside, and driver's door damaged and rusty on the inside. They came out pretty good, but it took some elbow grease to get it accomplished. :satisfied:
Due to the eternal problem of finding 4th gen replacement parts, you may have to restore the doors yourself..... got any pics of your door problems??

A yard near me has a couple 4ths and 1 5th with doors. I am out of town next week but will run out and take a look at them when I get back and see if they are in decent shape.
79Elky 05-06-2006, 05:00 PM Y'all do know, right, that 2-door Malibu doors are the same for the 78-85 Elkie?? I say "most", because I'm not entirely convinced, myself. Same with Poncho A/G-bodies, and most of those were 2-doors rather than 4-door fambly cars like the Malibu, it seems to me. I'm also not sure what the difference was in '86-'87 other than the mirrors mounted in a different location: whether that was because the skin shape changed or what. Malibus were only made '78-'83 :(
86 el camino Hwn styl 05-06-2006, 06:36 PM that would be great. also, I do know that malibu doors are supposed to fit, but those are rare in Hawaii too. my doors are really bad, both of them have no bottoms and flap all over the place when you close the door, it really is embarassing.
79Elky 05-06-2006, 07:13 PM AHHhhh, Hawaii.... no wonder yer desperate :-( Dunno what to recommend for that place, except it'll likely cost you a few pretty pennies. Fortunately (or not), the best source of rust-free doors is likely to be in the southwest which will help reduce shipping charges.
I dunno how different Monte doors are; whether the main difference is in the shape at the front and back, or just the outer door skin shape at the top and maybe bottom. There's a thread elsewhere hereabouts of some guy talking bout swapping on a Monte front clip but doing so requires making other changes, not to mention the width is apparently wider. But if you could find a Monte with good front and doors, and yer into doing that kinda customization, that might be an easier way out for you.
Otherwise, you'll just have to do like most of we haoles and make-do with what you've got until 5th-gen doors become available :(
theelcaminofactory 05-07-2006, 08:13 AM I know this will make a lot of you guys that have been here a while chuckle. The word is that Goodmark is suppose to receive the prototype doors in June and the doors should be available before the end of the year...or at least that's the word Goodmark is saying. I wasn't the one who contacted them........sooooooooo, if anyone wants to email Goodmark to verify this...by all means, go ahead, as a matter of fact it would be nice if they had a couple of thousand emails waiting for them Monday morning. I gave up a long time ago on them. I now have used doors and they're one of my summer projects. http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/HomePage.html By the way, any 2 door G-body door will bolt on a 5th gen Elky, but only Malibu and Lemans doors will line up with the body lines of an Elky, and of course, common sense...YOU MUST USE ELKY GLASS for them to work! The inner shells are the same on all 2 door G-bodys...the doorskins differ. So if you have/find rust free inner shells, you will only need the Elky/Malibu doorskins when they FINALLY become available.
