hello. I'm in need of some expertise. I just bought a 72 that was represented to be a true SS. The lady i bought it from said that she had it verified when she purchased it. I'm sharper on the 5th gen cars than the 68-72. Can someone help me out with this ? Its a beautiful truck with cowl hood & buckets. what puzzles me is the dash. no guages. i know these cars came in all flavers, so i don't rule out that it very well be for real. thanks, Ralph

If the dash has round holes for the gauges it is probably an SS. If it has a rectangle opening it would be a non SS el camino. Go to the Vin decoding forum for more info. Also check the differential if it is a 12 bolt rear it more than likely is an ss.

Hope this helped.

Welcome to ECC, Cricket. The only way to document a third gen, with one exception, is to have a build sheet or possibly a protecto plate. Yours being a 72 falls into the exception category. In 72 the engine designation was added to the VIN and the 454 was only avalible with the SS option. So if it has the W engine code it is a SS, other than that you need the afore mentioned documentation. The SS option parts could be added or removed along the way. The standard SS dash has the round instruments but is a idiot light dash. The tach and guages were an option. Hope that helps.
