Why can't I find dropped spindles for my 78 elky? I want to do 2" dropped spindles and 1" dropped springs up front.

If you have to go with drop spindles you want to use the 82 up ones and use the rotors for that year.

78 was a one off year with a shorter rotor hat and small outer bearings.

I reccommend not using drop spindles. Get a set of stiff springs and cut them to the height you need. The drop spindles have some geometry and interference issues. Personally I don't reccomend dropping it that much anyway as it's hard to drive. It's tough at stock height to keep from scraping in places especially if you have the front spoiler.

87Elcamino. What color is that on your elky? I'm looking at similar colors.

Some drop spindles move this inward to get rid of this issue. The geometry issues are VERY small.

Chopping the springs will also have a negative effect on the suspension geometry, especially as the amount of drop increases.

In short, BOTH of these methods of lowering have problems. For most people, the drop spindles have fewer problems. The chopped springs will be a bit less expensive.

Dropping the front of an Elky 3" will create some drivability issues. Do this one step at a time.

As usual, Ernie makes the point. This subject has been beat like a cross-eyed stepchild. Take his advice and you'll see it done step-by-step.

Gotta admit though, the is the first I've heard of recommending cutting springs instead of using quality dropped spindles. I might cut for just an inch or so, but beyond that most folks cut just to avoid spending the bucks - and tolerate the consequences. The idea of quality spindles is that they will NOT hurt geometry.

Take care.

Hint: My bet is you'd regret 3" if you want to cleanly get over speed bumps and cats.
