Mine was leaking pretty good on my 85 also. What i did was take it to a glass shop the guy removed the chrome then stripped all the old sealer off and installed new sealer. Told me to try that first. It is not leaking anymore drove 40 miles in the pouring rain and no leaks.. Might try that first.

Windshields in all GM cars after at least 1970 (I'm to old to remember exactly what year) are actually glued into the windshield frame with a ribbon of butyl rubber caulk. It's supposed to "never" dry out or lose its seal, but we all know different, don't we. 85-SS-Elky is right, if you have more than a minor leak, take the car to a glass shop, have him remove the glass and the old "seal" and install a new one. He has all the tools to do it right and although it is a job that you theoretically could do yourself, it's too easy to break the glass and then you have to go to him anyway. Beware, though, it's been my experience that he won't be responsible if the glass breaks when he's removing it. If you remove the trim around your windshield and find that you have only one or two spots where you have lost the seal, you can clean the channel and the edge of the glass and press some sealant into the edge where you see the leak and fix it that way. You can get the tool you need to pop the trim at any auto parts store for a few bucks. Just be sure that you always keep the tool flat against the glass as you "twist" to pop the clips loose because if you get the tool up on edge, you're likely to crack the glass.

Local shop qouted me $60 to remove the old seal and reseal my windsheild. Until I get the chance to get over there to have it done, I have found another use for duct tape :D

Guess the 25 dollars i spent to get mine resealed was a good deal then.. Me lucky for once... NO WAY!

What should be used instead when there is need for sealing?

There are lots of caulks that do not have silicone in them. Do not know of any names off hand.

Silicone is fun to clean up for paint either. There is buytl in a chalk tube, you could try latex( I don't know how long it would talk to break down). There's a bit out there to try. Good luck.
