I want to change the radio in my '83. I haven't gone digging in the dash yet to see what all I need to take off. Does the dash have to come off or can I get enough access from the front and glove box areas? If the dash has to come out, can anybody give me a step by step? I see 4 screws at the defroster area, and possibly bolts at the lower corners. What does it take to get that dash off?
Thanks in advance!

If your 83 is like my 85 all you have to do is remove the four screws holding the radio plate to the dash. Remove the radio knobs take the plate off and remove 4 more small screws behind it. Undo the antenna lead and it came right out the front no problems at all.

also might be one nut you would have to pull on the side of the radio on the passenger side near the back. you can access this nut by removing the screw that holds the glove box door open and by allowing it to fall on down you can get in there to this nut. i can't remember if it is 7/16 but it is close to that. maybe 10mm. also this nut is screwed onto a stud that fits into a brace and you will have to wrestle and angle and probably say a few choice words while you are getting this stud out of the bracket. watch out back there as there are lots of sharp surfaces and edges but what the hey, a few battle scars never hurt nothing.

Yeah, what they said! 4 phillips head screws on the faceplate, four hex head screws on the front bracket (7mm I believe), and the rear bracket with a 10mm. You can have that radio out in less than 10 minutes!

Wish it was that easy to pull the radio on my vette! Gotta pull the whole freakin' console to get at it!

Thanks. I appreciate the help. I think my biggest concern is that the new radio will require different bracketing which will probably require access to the sides of the radio area. I'm definitely going to try to do it from the front if possible. Thanks again!

Any stereo shop should an adapter set-up to allow you to mount it in the stock location with little or no modification...

If its an aftermarket radio thats a 1/2 DIN size then you can find a install kit with the right brackets just about anywhere that sells radios, heck i found one a wal-mart that work for just about any GM car made after 78 i think. I know i bought to use in my elky but then ended up using it in my 95 grand prix.

Thanks to everyone. This is my first time to use this forum, and this is clearly the place to go for first class help with El Camino problems.
Thanks!
