I just found this site, its exactly what ive been searching for for months! I just got first el camino a few months ago, its a 64' auto, 327. i just got all the body work done and its going to get painted pretty soon, after that i was thinking about getting or building a new engine, i was wondering if anybody has put a big block in a 64, or if any one knows what engines would fit? ive got big plans for this thing, and this site is making the process look alot easier. thanks- doug

Yes a big block Chevy is a bolt in swap.

do the 327, dont let a good engine like that go to waste. im going to redo the 283 in my 65 and put a injection system on it. nothing will wind up like those 2 engines, just my 2 cents

Yes, a big block (396, 402, 427, 454, 502) will all fit. I too however am partial to the 327cu motors. As a matter of fact my father and I are putting together a 1991 Camaro drag car based around a 1963 327cu. The 327cu has been built with 8000rpm's in mind and it's running an Enderle Alcohol tunnel ram fuel injection system. One of these days well strap here down to the dyno and find out what kind of power she'll make on the track.

These old 327cu's are perhaps some of the best engines Chevy ever made. They are a short throw motor (quicker rev's), the older ones are all forged cranks and small journals. Same bore size has a 350cu but a shorter throw!

I agree with the advice to rebuild the 327. Unless your building a really modified vehicle, the 327 would be a great motor to put back in.
If modified is your plan, the engine choices are almost limitless.

Hi Guys, This is my first post , so here goes. I too agree with all the members who recomend staying with the 327. As the owner of a restoration shop in New Orleans, I have seen my share of A body cars with engines ranging from six cylinder up to big ol' 454. That little V8 is probably the most enjoyable street motor out there. Quick revs with a big scratch in second is enough in my book, enjoy! Dave

What are planing on racing? For the street you are better off staying with a small block. The 327 was a great engine. You can do so much with it.

:) Hi The Doug 18, Welcome to the GREATEST site ever! Everything you want to know will be answered here! I owned lot's of Chevelle's, 64's, 65's 66's & a 69! Some were El Camino's & some were Malibu's/ Chevelle's...they are pretty much all interchangeable as far as drivetrain's go! My 65' El Camino had a 230 6-Cyc., then I got a 327 for it & then I got the Itch & got a LS6 454...BOY-O-BOY WHAT POWER!!! So much Power that I kept shearing off Lug Bolt's like they were tooth pic's! After the motor got tired from Street Racing & going thru tire's like a Mad Man, & replaced the 454 with a 350 4-Bolt Main, 202 Head's & all the goodie's to make it do what I wanted it to do! As light as the 64' is, a Small Block Motor will be everything you will need & then some! It's YOUR Ride & it's up to you to decide what you want...but just to let you know, the BB Chevy cost Big Big Buck's compaired to the SB Chevy...I have a 59' Elky with a 350 & a Powerglide & I'm building mine to just "CRUZE" in & I will have Plenty of Power to do what I want!
