I have a 4" rise cowled fiberglass hood.
I would like to open it up so the engine bay can breath.
Looking for those who have experienced and cut openings in the cowled area.
Pics, diagrams and so on, would be a BIG help.
Not looking to drill a bunch of holes in it.
Want to be able to make it functional and look good when finished.

I'm a bit confused as to what you want to do, all 4" fiberglass cowl hoods I've seen are already made with the opening in the back. Making it a functioning cowl induction hood requires fabricating some kind of box to direct the airflow directly into the carb from the back of the hood...which is how you get the benefits of installing a cowl hood...otherwise they're just for looks or air filter clearance issues. You might try looking over at www.maliburacing.com and doing a search on cowl induction.

I am looking to only cut the two holes needed to open up the rise area on the hood.
At this time I am not concerned about making it a true cowl induction.
This hood has NO openings at this time. Only for looks.
I would like to see others who have a rise on their hoods to see how they have them cut-out and or drilled.

8) Can you post a picture of what you have? Are you saying it is like a flat hood with a cowl scoop grafted on therefore there you cannot see the underside of the cowl scoop? I'm just trying to understand what you have. My hood the cowl area is completely open and I will have to put a panel in to make a seal around the air box I will be fabricating. The back part on mine is open and I will be adding a screen to keep the garbage out. Some I have seen are not open at the back and they have used a large hole saw and cut like 4 holes in the panel and then screened it on the inside.

I know this is very confusing.
It is a full fiberglass hood with the cowl hump moulded right in.
Is blocked off, solid, at the rear of hood and inside is about a 6" plenum, that is blocked off too.100_0713100_0714100_0715
Hope you can access the pics.
If not plz. supply me an e-mail address and I will forward them that way.
Thx for your interest and help.................

8) I looked at the pictures and the brace across the back would have to be cut. Not out, but opened up to the shape of the cowl on both sides. Should be hollow in there but I will not say for sure. If you know who made the hood (by the show finish underneath I'd say Harwood) they could tell you if it is safe to open it up. The only thing is the inside area will not be finished like the rest of the hood.
That said, it will get lots of air flow through. Now if you are talking functional, you would have to then seal off the cowl section by glassing in a panel (most use aluminum) then you would find where the center of the air cleaner would be on it and cut it to the proper diameter. Then you would have to find or build an air cleaner that would seal to the panel when the hood was closed.
If you open up the cowl though, make sure you screen the opening or you will get all kinds of trash in under the hood.
