I recently replaced the stock carburator, Rochester 4V, on my 86 (305). I used a remanufactured stock one. Since it is now cold here in the Mid-Atlantic it is apparent that the choke does not work properly, doesn't seem to engage when I start the truck. After it warms up every thng appears to be ok. Question: How does a novice adjust the choke? :?

When the engine is cold open the throttle all the way. that should engage the fast idle cam and the choke. Look into the carb. If the butterfly is all the way closed then the choke is adjusted correctly (for the most part). Next you have to set the fast idle cam. It is adjusted on the passenger side of the carb. Its the only adjustment there if I remember my Q-jets correctly. There will be a screw there start the car without disengaging the choke and set the idle to about 1200 RPM using the screw on that side of the carb.

Once the engine has warmed up the choke will not be all the way closed again unless the car cools off completely.

If the butterfly needs to be adjusted then loosen 3 screws around the choke spring housing. Turn the cap until the butterfly just closes and give it one quarter turn more or about 1/4 of a turn. That is a down and dirty adjustment. Its not by the book but it will work.
