I have an '87 with the AM/FM/Cassette, which the cassette has totally stopped working.

I know they aren't the greatest sounds, but I want to keep it original. I have installed a CD/XM in the smugglers area that can't be seen, but I would like to get this repaired. I've taken it everywhere close, even called some supposedly speciality/custom shops in Charlotte and Atlanta, and they all want to sell me a "replacement" and don't want to fool with the repairs.

Anyone know of a place I can get this repaired? Sent off? Anything?

84 Elky,

I used these guys to repair a Bose AM/FM/CD unit out of my '93 Z28. In my case, the CD was still good, the amplifier had failed. Cost me $100. Expensive vs. buying an after-market unit but I needed to keep with the Bose.

I understand your reason for wanting to keep it all original, but when it comes to sound systems, it's not a big deal if your intalling the same type AC/Delco system. I installed a AC/Delco LED stereo out of a 95 Trans Am with cassette and 5 band equalizer in my 84, using a color matching blue/black bezel from an 87...no it wasn't available from the factory that way, but it looks like it was. With everything I had to buy to do it, I spent less than $100, including the faceplate, stereo, and DIN adapter. Problem...now I've got two clocks, the LED clock on the stereo and the mechanical clock/tach on the gauge panel, of which one is always correct, and the other is only correct twice a day. Guess I'll just replace the tach.
