Hello
I have a 78 elky with a 305 heres my problem I put a brand new battery in with new ends I tried to start it and it cranked over but it would not start then I tried agaign nothing happend so I checked my conections to the batt and all was thight I then took the battery back to Napa they teseted it and told me this should have started very easily so I put the batery back in tried it nothing then I noticed down by the stater it was smoking I dont get it what could be wrong is the silinoide bad

My guess is something in or on the starter might be a bad cable . did u check 2 see if the cable is going to ground?? 'SHORTING OUT" if not pull starter and have it checked. most parts stores will do this for free.

I think your car has a fuseable link in the harness near the starter. It may have opened, smoke could have been from it. With it open, the starter will not work.

Id say that could be it.
or
could be your starter fried.

what color was the smoke? If it had a blueish tint, it was electrical.
Pull your starter out, see if its seased. You should be able to take it to napa and they can test it and everything for you if you don't know how.
