I'm thinking about upgrading the exhaust on my '84 ElCam, but I'd like someones opinion on what looks best on the 5th Gen.

Looks best? Unusual question for exhaust. Not sure, maybe ceramic headers, polished stainless tubing and lakeside pipes. Hardly the most functional though.

However, if you add functionality and price into your decision, there are tons of threads on the subject. In general, I still like ceramic headers, properly sized dual exhausts, a correctly placed H or Y pipe, using quality aluminized pipe and two of the "turbo" designed mufflers. Oh yeah, you'd expect me to like the chrome "Bowtie" exhaust tips.

my personal favorite for street vehicles is full length headers, 2.5" piping, X-pipe, going through some good ol' 40 series Flowmasters coming out right before the rear wheels with some square style exhaust tips. Could be the fact im a NASCAR fan and the side exhaust just tickles my fancy.

Im running a street legal set up with 2.5" single exhaust through a high flow cat, then over the axle i have a 80 series flowmaster for a CAMARO/FIRECHICKEN with the single in/dual out with some nice 3" exhaust tips hanging out the back.

Thanks!Your question is rather vague...what looks best or what works best and looks good? If you intend to do further performance upgrades to your Elky, upgrading to a performance exhaust system with full length headers and an X pipe is fine...like installing a 350+hp non emissions 350. If you plan on just keeping your 305 as is, and your exhaust system needs replacing, than a stainless steel exhaust will last longer than steel and you can install dual pipes from the muffer back for looks. Spending big bucks on an exhaust system that's overkill for your 305 isn't something I'd recommend and it could even hurt performance/gas mileage...spend the money on something else for appearances. If you do decide to go with a true dual exhaust system, another thing that hasn't been considered is your transmission crossmember...it either needs to be modified or replaced by an aftermarket which of course adds to the expense.

It all depends on were you are too.
if your car doesnt require smog checks, then go by the standards for a truck for that state.

Im in MA right now, car from CA, but i have hooker comps, stainless 3", xpypes, summit racing mufflers, and they shoot out right before the rear tires.

2 1/4 pipes. Also have dynomax long tube headers. No cat. converters either.
