There is a high pressure area that is created at the base of the windshield. The cowl hood takes advantage of this and channels it into the intake. At least that's the way I remember it.

My understanding is that they use that air presure to force induce air into the carb for a denser charge in the intake. It is suppose to increase the power available in top end. Some people say it works and some say it doesn't add much if any to the power.

Some people say it works and some say it doesn't add much if any to the power. Either way, they still look cool

Besides what everyone has said about how cowl induction works, the way THAT particular set up works is it uses a switch on the gas pedal that runs to a solenoid connected to the flapper door. When you push the pedal down far enough, the switch makes the solenoid rod push out thus opening the door. I've got one on my '81 Z,very cool indeed. I have a spare scoop that I've been toying with the idea of putting it on my Elky instead of the doomed hood. It fit's the contour and lines of the hood perfectly but I'm not sure if it look stupid or not.

But NASCAR racers use that principle--air intake is connected to the base of the windshield. They think it works
