yeah we need to either get our director to plan us all an event - a get together - or we may need to see if the forum can get us a new director if O'Rourke is too busy. I mean that happens and maybe its not his fault he seems to never be here, but I have time and if they want me to do it, I will try to be Region 6 director and plan a few activities for us.

Other regions are doing this regularly and we are falling behind, and I KNOW we have many many Elky's here in Florida, and we could recruit a lot of new members here as well...

any thoughts?

I was talking just a local thing not a show or anything like that. Maybe a lunch thing here in the West Florida / Pensacola / Milton area. Anyone uip for that? I'd be interested in a North Florida show though.

I'm sitting down here in Daytona. I would be interested in doing something like that, but probably won't, gas prices are killing me right now.

Hi.....just joined this forum. My 1970 has been off the road for awhile, but getting the DMV paperwork to get it legal again. Friends were amazed when it started up with just a new battery after a few years of sitting around (all their warnings about needing starter fluid, bah....she always starts when asked). I'm in the Clearwater area....maybe there will be enough members for a club someday?

Anyone know of any clubs in this area? I'll be looking for fellow EC admirers to for honest advice...I don't trust most mechanics since I'm just a "dumb girl". If I start getting it back into top shape, I want someone under the hood who loves it as much as I do.

Hello Cher and Welcome to El Camino Central and the Region 6 Forum!

Glad to have you join us. This particular region has been kind of quiet here and I and a few others are trying to get it 'cranked' up, since there are a lot of Elky lovers here in Florida!

As for your request about clubs in your area, you might find this list handy, as its fairly good. I am sure there are some newer clubs throughout Florida that arent on here, and maybe even a couple that have merged, but this should get you started...

Florida Car Clubs (http://www.cruisintimes.com/USAEVENTS/fla.clubs.html)

Keep an eye out here for us to plan a few get togethers etc. As summer is upon us, it might take a few meetings since Florida is so geographically spread out. I would like to maybe see if everyone in the panhandle could meet in like Tallahassee or Marianna for instance (and anyone else wanting to make the drive could as well), then maybe those of us on the peninsula could maybe meet in like Orlando or something...

Anyways, welcome again, post often and post pics of your 70 when you can.

Mike

I haven't taken any recent photos, but I have a silly little EC story w/photo webpage linked if you hit the WWW button below. The car's a little worse for wear by now.

It'll probably be awhile before I travel any distance....things to fix and all that before I'd trust a road trip. Not to mention that I ripped out all the moldy wet carpeting and it really looks like hell inside. Finally got one of those infamous rear window leaks last year.

Yeah, I'd like to get back on the road. My room-mate said I have to stop watching all these Hot Rod tv shows until I have mine back on the road....it's too tormenting to watch everyone else having fun. I'm going to have to get a new car lease soon, and I just can't stand any of the new cars........I don't understand how we evolved into such boring vehicles. Supposedly, the gas economy lead to the end of cool cars.....but now it's just find to drive a big ol' SUV with the same crappy mileage. I say I'd rather put 30K into my 1970 than plop it down for a car with absolutely no character.

Agreed, let's set something up sometime. Not too much left in Navarre for dining establishments though. I suppose P-Cola beach is just as bad though. :(

Hey Ya'll!

Native Pensacolian here and the mom of the owner of a 85 Elkie. The Elkie has a few problems and I am NOT a mechanic, but I need a good mechanic who knows Elkie's. Anyone got any recommendations? I think I have a tranny issue (skipping 2nd and bogging down) and need a good tranny shop too! My mechanic only works on Acuras so he's no help to me with the Elkie. LOL!! I really need to get this bogging problem solved for my son's safety. The Elkie was his 16th birthday present and his main ride. He loves it for it's uniqueness, but with the traffic lately, he needs more acceleration pulling into traffic. I need more peace of mind!

Thanks for any help ya can give.

Sorry, no recommendations your way in P-Cola. My tranny guy is way over in Niceville. I think I'm beginning to have tranny problems but aren't sure since the Diablo spends most of his time parked.

There are quite a few shadetree guys your way and plenty of junkyards with decent donor trannies if you are looking for a cheap way out. If not, I'd just stick with a dedicated transmission shop to do a swap. It's a relatively common transmission if it's a TH350 so it still shouldn't be an arm and a leg. Maybe a leg and hand. :) That means it still won't be cheap.

Hope that can send you somewhat in a OK direction.

Hi Alan

Thanks for the reply. I'd love to hook up with a good shade-tree mechanic (my dad was one) but they are getting a little hard to find.
Since I plan on keeping the Elkie and restoring it, would it be better to rebuild the tranny, get one from a junk yard, or spring for a new one? The Elkie used to be my dad's and was a gift to my son, so I have little invested at this point. I really don't mind spending the bucks to do it up right.

I think you just answered your own question Belinda. ;) I'd stick with a good reputable, clean TRANSMISSION ONLY shop. That being said that doesn't mean that all dirty backwoodsy repairitall shops are bad. You may pay a little more but you'll have a warranty, at least with a chain place like AAMCO. As far as clean goes, I just always feel better around a clean car place. Growing up in all my father's different places taught me to keep them clean. It just feels like a clean places turns out more quality work, but of course that is all psychological. Good Luck and keep us updated on your progress.

What part of town are you in?

I live over in Milton and am currently redoing my Elco.. thanks to Ivan I had 6ft+ of salt water damage and am completely restoring it (1984) and we are friends with a local shop.

They do very good work and I'm currently working on my El camino there (I am 17)

I had a TH350 originally and am swapping for a 700R4..my old transmission can be rebuilt, and it has a performance shiftkit and no slipping..was a good transmission and would bolt right up to your sons, if you are interested I could rebuild it and would be willing to sell it and install it.

I live off Langley, between Scenic and 9th avenue, and yes, I would be interested in your rebuilt tranny. Right now, I'm just a tad confused. I thought the engine was a 305 V6, but as it was pointed out to me, a 305 is a V8, which I should have known cause that's what I had in my 1980 Camaro. Now I've got to get my son to stay home long enough for me to go out and re-check the engine. :? I posted the problem under "engines" and have gotten quite a few responses with many different suggestions. My next step should probably be to get the Elkie to someone who could tell me for sure that the problem is or is not the tranny. Are ya any good at diagnosing problems? :) Or maybe the guys at the shop where yours is at could take a look at it? What's your suggestion?

Email me if you want to set up a meet. My mother lives in Milton off Ward Basin road, and I'm pretty familiar with the area. (got relatives in Milton, Pace, Chumukla and Jay) I could meet you somewhere convenient for you if you'd like to check out the Elkie and see what ya think.

4.3 V-6 is what it should have if it's a V-6.

Thanks Diablo....sure needed that clarification. :-D I also got more of the history of the Elkie. My dad bought it from a lady who had it garaged for 10 years after her husband died. He was the original owner, and drove it as a second car. My dad was a truck driver, and only drove the Elkie on weekends whenever he was home. So that explains the low mileage (65,000) on the stock engine. Dad had it to the Chevy dealer for a diagnostic and had it completely serviced before giving it to my son on his 16th birthday. So really, the Elkie should be in great shape, which makes me wonder if the tranny would be the problem, given it has such low mileage and the way the Elkie has been driven. Hmmm, guess its time to get it back to a shop for the diagnostics and start from there.

Thanks again,

Belinda
