Metal adhesive bonding is becoming more widespread not only in vehicle manufacture, collision repairs but also for rust work. However, it cannot replace metal fusion welding completely. I and other tradesmen I know, have used adhesives on the larger flat areas of panels where heat warping from welding creates too much filler work.
Adhesive bonding of metal panels is a specialized repair procedure and overlap joints should be offset (special tools needed). Surface prep is critical and joints must be clamped for minimum of 4 hours even for a fast adhesive to ensure a strong bond. We were forced to purchase 8 expensive 18" and 24"inch "C" type vise grips to do a lot of the repairs.
Again, some welding is still required as many patch panels don't fit worth a damn anyway.
Cost of the adhesive, prep materials, tools and special surface cleaners would cover the cost of a home use/DIY MIG welder.
As a note though, we have had some great results using adhesives and all metal fillers when shaving Chevy S10 door handles etc.
