Welcome to the new Elky 50th Anniversary Forum! Here's where we will keep you informed of what's happening for the big celebration in Carlisle, PA in June of 2009.

We had a meeting with the Carlisle events manager last week and ther's lots of exciting events on the horizon, but we need to start now.

We'll keep you informed as progress is made and your comments and suggestions are more than welcome. We'll be calling for volunteers as time goes on also!

Hey Leo,
Was just wondering if you have had any time to advance this at all? Let us know, I for one am deadly eager to get details. Also, thanks for the hard work ahead of time.

At the moment we are pursuing a '59 for use on the show posters, flyers, cards, tee shirts, etc.

THe main thing is that we would like to see as many peopl;e as possible at the '08 GM Carlisle preregistered in order to show the Carlisle people we are a viable group.

Is the poster or logo car going to consist of just a 59 or will it possibly be a center year with a gen 2,3,4,5 in each corner as back ground cars. If a design of that nature is used it could be a t-shirt or jacket item. Could be a good seller and maybe good enough to get pre-sold so we could all be wearing them come June 09. Just an idea to show our presence at the show we are featured at.
I am already putting this trip on my get scheduled and plan to go board.

-----Florida Guys ----- I have email Mr planner "LENNY" and I was putting forth the idea of a group meeting some where along I95 somewhere north of I4 or at I4 and a 2nd stop for anyone north of there. and do this 1000 mile trip in a group of x cars. If anyone has any ideas start a region 6 tread.

Yes and no....

We will supply the Carlisle people with pictures of a '59. They will use it for various purposes including a poster, mailing cards, handouts, the cover of the show catalog, inside in stories, official T-shirts, etc. This is being worked on now and so far only one owner of a white 59 has come forward. Carlisle prefers a non white so if anyone comes forward it would be a good idea to do it now since this June is the cut off.

Secondly... NECOA/ECC is making a banner which will be used on our tent at the event hopefully this year and of course in 2009. We also hope to sell banners to anyone who wishes one to use at local car shows. The banner is being worked on now and once a couple of ideas are finalized we'll post them here for comment. The banner will have all five generations on it.

I'd like to go this year but I'm afraid I wont be able to. Have to take a Dynamics and Modeling classes this summer so hopefully next summer I won't have to take classes and will be able to come. I do plan on going next year though.

Trust me I am going to try like heck to be ready for that show. No way I can get in for the poster but I will try to get down there with the truck. Only thing slowing me down is brakes and interior project running behind schedule. I know it is going to be a great 50th birthday for the Elkys. See you there.

wow this sounds like it will be so bad ass..i just bought my 78'ss.... so this gives me about a yr to get the old girl road worthy but that should be plenty of time...she is already in pretty good shape for her past...being an indiana car since she was first bought...it has endured many cold winters and hot as hell summers....she may not be show standard but she and i will be there! thats for sure!

I was just there and going again this week. I go often and stay at the Comfort Suites in downtown Carlisle. It's a mile from the fairgrounds, not the cheapest (around $140) but still not bad and it has an indoor garage and free breakfast. Lots of restaurants and bars in the area within walking distance, very convenient.

There are also many others in the area.

I'm planning to come over to the U.S. (from Australia) for this event. I have a 59 so it would be good for me to be there for my Elkys 50th birthday. My wife will also be celebrating 50 years next June. Is there a definate date for this event?

David,

If you are a camper, you can camp for $25 for the whole event. That is unless you want more than one space. Just be aware that there is no electricity. There is one shower building so if you are an early riser, it is to your advantage.

Hope to see you there.

Ya, i do love camping, so that would be great. But i would still need to save up the money for gas, because right now i get about 10 - 15 miles a gallon, its gana take about 900 miles, 90 gallons of gas at $4 a gallon(will be more then i bet) Thats $360 in gass alone, plus food and stuff. But i will definetly try to get there lol, even if i have to push my car there lol. and hopefully it will be painted by then as well, right now its like 3 or 4 colors.

I plan on being there with my '69.... or my '72 if she is ready...

I was just there for Corvettes at Carlisle. We stayed in Gettysburg.

It was a nice drive each morning through the country.

Will we plan group outings .. or Fun Field parking areas for only El Caminos .. or certain years..???

Or will the NECOA have a tent where we can meet and mingle?

Are we planning any group caravans to the event?

caspiantiger
08-27-2008, 12:25 PM
I would love to join a caravan or something. that would be sweet, even if we just got everyone thats going from necoa to meet up the morning the show starts, and then all drive in together.

Bebe

I am coming from the VA NC line north.

I have Corvette friends who do a lot of the caravanning.

Maybe something can be set up like the 50th Anniversary Corvette Caravan that they did on their 50th!! All the 'vettes converged caravans on one spot. Dealers were meeting places and were service facilities if needed, group hotels were set up along the way as many states came together.

… and of course the big party at the end……. Meeting fellow El Camino owners and seeing their cars!

Cool!

Jo,

Where will you be starting your journey? I'm in Quinton, Va, just east of Richmond. I will definitely be going to Carlisle. I've been at the last 2 GM Nationals and really enjoy the event. I haven't picked the departture date yet, but I think I will be staying in a hotel this time.

Let me know your plans.

Jim,

I am in Chesapeake so I will be heading up 95/295 towards Carlisle.

At this point I have not planned my trip. I will be staying in a Hotel. It gets so hot up there a nice shower and a cool bed is worth it!

If our plans jive maybe there could be a caravan of at least two!

Are you driving yours?

I stayed in Gettysburg before. It is 30-40 minutes out with nice hotels who aren't sold out in advance. Hampton Inn for instance. The drive was fun the back way to Carlisle.

Let's keep planning!

Jo,

I may trailer mine next year. The stove bolt 6 doesn't get as good gas mileage as my Silverado and a buddy offered to let me use his trailer. I'm really partial to A/C.

Geez, I may have to live in mine by June. No way I'd ever be able to get out there. I think it's great you have an event like this though.

That said, and nobody take this the wrong way. It's kind of funny how we have anniversaries for things that aren't consecutive. Like having a 50th anniversary for a vehicle that hasn't been produced in 21 years. Or celebrating Elvis' birthday when he's been dead for 31 years.

Like say you got married then divorced 10 years later, then after 5 years of going solo got back together and re-married the same person. So would you celebrate your 15th wedding anniversary or your 1st or maybe your 11th?

:? :-D

Interesting viewpoint. Here is something to ponder.

The1950s brought us an era of automotive innovation that saw cutting-edge styles and out-of-the-box designs such as the Corvette, the Thunderbird, and the El Camino. To commemorate the American ingenuity, The 50th Anniversary Celebration will close out a decade of excellence in a huge 2-day event, filled with a 1,500+ car show, a big-budget concert featuring a famous rock band, open-header cruising, vendors, food, and more. RV and overnight camping is available as well as VIP parking inside the gates.

Entertaining the car enthusist at car shows have alwas been a problem for show promotors because they don't focus on the fact that many come from afar to gather and they need to be taken care of.

That is why we at are going to great expense to make sure that the 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway on Oct 31-Nov 1, 2009 is going to be memorable. 5 bands will play throughout the day leading up to the main concert featuring a major rock band with close ties to the hot rod world. Picture 2 rows of vehicles on the drag strip in front of the grand stands. Then throw in all-day, Open-Header cruising along the frontage road, and leave room for 65 acres of secured parking and overnight camping. I think you will enjoy the weekend and consider this event the one to be at. RRL

I recently picked up a 67 el camino and am now re-discovering the joys of my youth crawing under my old 66 SS chevelle (joined USMC in 74 and parents sold it on me). So can I get an update on the 50th in PA, dates, venders, camping, events etc...

Secondly, I need to get a new drive train, anyone know whats all is involved in planting a LT1 to a R4 ie drive shaft length is if different than the powerglide/350 combo curently in it, how about cross member or electrics. Thought I'd ask the experts!

Pete,

First, Let me welcome another 2nd gen. I really hope you can get up to Carlisle.

the first thing that you need to do is pre-register. Pre-registration is $30 and saves you $10. Search the beginning of this thread and you'll find a link that Leo set up so you can pre-register directly from here. The registration covers you, your car, and one passenger for 3 days June 26, 27 and 28.

There are a lot of hotels in the area or you can camp on site. There is a drag strip not far from the fair grounds and a number of events during the 3 days. There are also a lot of attractions in the area including Civil War things in Gettysburg, the AACA Museum in Hershey; just depends on your liking.

Let me know if I can be of any other help.
