The only factory originial ones I've seen in 85 elcaminos, have been the 7.5".

Welcome to ECC/NECOA Rick!

5th gen El Caminos are 7.5", series 2 carrier, with a 26 spline axle.

Sorry to piggyback on your question, but how about 4th gens? I decided to change the rear gear grease in my '77 and got the necessary gasket from Auto Zone. All they listed was a 7.5" (and some other 7" plus a fraction I cannot remember) size. When I pulled the cover, it was a completely different shape! I returned with my differential cover to show them the difference and was simply told, "that's all our computer shows."
I asked them then for a gasket for a '77 Camaro with an 8.5" ring gear and received the right gasket.
Is their computer wrong or is it possible I have a non-original rear end in my El Camino?

The "Series 2" info is very important information. I didn't know much about rearends and almost ordered the wrong 3.73 ring and pinion for my '87 until the guys on this site clued me in on the different series "carriers".

Now I've got the 3.73 R&P and I'm just waiting until a friend rebuilds a 700R4 to replace my TH350. My TH350 is only about 18 months old. It replaced the factory POS, M200 tranny.
