I need to get better mileage ( gas is almost twice the price over here), the choke is missing
on my Rochester Q-jet and people tell me I really should get a better carb.
So now I've gotten a nice offer to buy a new Edelbrock 1406, 600 cfm
with electrical choke and am really considering buy one.
Now since this will be my first carb install ever I would appreciate
some input:

Has anyone experience with this carb. Does it give better mileage?
Are there any problems with it?

The Edelbrock has got mechanical secondaries instead of the
vaccum ones I suppose is on the Q-jet. Will this be a problem when installing?

The Edelbrock is also made for standard bore, but the intake(Edelbrock) as I understand
it is now spreadbore. Is this just a simple matter of purchasing an adapter?

Any information is highly appreciated.

Have you tried www.edelbrock.com (autoparts) this is their website and they have techreps (Marcus Lin) who are very helpful! It takes about 24hrs to respond back to any questions you have for them. In the meantime you can check and see what model# (yours) Edelbrock intake will work with the #1406 carb and maybe view some performance graphs also for this setup. I just used their techrep the other day to get some info on an old early 70's Edelbrock intake I picked up and they were very helpful. I think these guys really do care about their company and their product line...which is rare these days! 8)

That 1406 carb will work great with a edelbrock performer or performer rpm intake. No problem installing it. I noticed a increase in mileage & driveablity when I installed mine. The electric choke is really nice. I have had it for a few years now with no problems at all. Great product in my opinion.

i have the thunder series carb from edelbrock
it is best to use their adapter if you are going to use your factory intake like i did .the reason for this is that if you use the mr. gasket open adapter you will lose any gains you will be getting from the better carb .i don't think i get better mileage but i get way better performance with the old q-jet i had trouble pulling away from the lights but with the new edelbrock that i dialed in myself i can really haul ass and have tromped a couple mustangs too

Whats the difference between the edelbrock performer and performer rpm intake manifolds?

The eldelbock RPM is made for more power on the top end, higher rpm range. The performer is for idle up.

thanks for the info, that seems to make good enough sence to me. Does anyone have any idea on which one is better? Does the rpm make less power at low rpm's? or does it just out perform the non rpm all the way through? thanks a lot for the info, i like to know as much as i can

It depends on where you want most of your power. I choose the performer because I rarely see the upper end of rpms. The rpm intake starts making power higher in the rpm band so it does what more power on the upper end but gives up power at lower. I hope that makes sence.

Makes perfect sence to me, thanks a lot
