wow, that's a rare one. There is only 1 or 2 other members I know of on here with a diesel.

I'm not sure on the trans, but diesel camino or someone else can surely help.

I don't have personal knowledge of this but since Diesel motors tend to make their torque down low I'd have to guess that a Turbo 350 or a 700R4 would be in place since those were the heaviest duty transmission available in an El Camino that year.. I'd be surprised if it was something like an Allison as the GM passenger car/light truck diesels weren't the monsters you would find in a 1 ton truck.

The other option is some variation of a saginaw 4 speed manual although no manuals are shown in the transmission list in my book.

My book says the following were the available transmissions and the code which should be on the trim tag (current owner of 5th gens can help with location here)
700R4 = MD8 (4spd)
200C = MV9 (3spd)
2004R = MW9 (4spd o/d)
350C = MX2 (3spd)
250C = M31 (3spd)

As an aside I'm a bit confused as the eighth digit is supposed to be the engine code and then there should be 3 letters that may identify the trans type but my book has a bad example that doesn't match the codes. So check the VIN after the eighth digit as well and see if the three character code matches my list.

:D
