: Can I get some opinions on this rendering?
'84ElCaminoSS 12-29-2003, 11:01 PM Hey everyone, as some of you might know, I'm a 3D modeler and designer. I've done a lot of work for individuals and Popular Hot Rodding but this time I have done something for myself. Instead of sponsoring someone's project with a rendering by carsbykris.com, I have done a rendering of my car, or at least what it will look like soon. I plan to do more to the paint, etc. so that when it is time to go to the paint and body shop, I can hand them a rendering of EXACTLY what I want it to look like.
I was hoping to get some comments and maybe some critiques here since there are a lot of 5th gen. pros that frequent these boards. Can you spot any mistakes or problems with the model? I just want to be sure it's perfect!
Thanks for looking!
Kris

Scrubby 12-30-2003, 01:57 AM Sleek and stylish, looks like it's doing about 60 while standing still. GM should take a few hints and start producing these. It's a shame they never listen to what people really want in a vehicle these days. :D

VERY nice job Kris!!! Your work still amazes me!! 8)

theelcaminofactory 12-30-2003, 05:13 AM Ooooooooh, that's purdy...I like it! 8)
BigRed 12-30-2003, 06:03 AM Very impressive! Your work puts mine to shame. I like it alot!
ElkySS 12-30-2003, 06:13 AM Very nice, indeed, Kris. Rolled rear pan, shaved side running lights. Might consider going to electric door poppers and get rid of those door handles. Try it with a billet tubular grill.
Excellent job.

Try it with a billet tubular grill.Ooooooooh, now your cooking with gazzz! How bout a Choo Choo nosed version as well?
7d8ss 12-30-2003, 08:13 AM Kris,Top looks a little high. With the low profile of the body, the top might look a little more in proportion with a 2" chop. Love the tubular grill idea. Smooth, clean, lines. Great job! Jon
gmc caballero 12-30-2003, 09:20 AM :-D Thats one sweeeeeet ride. Different yet very tastefully done.
Elky85 12-30-2003, 10:59 AM that is nice.
if your looking for some ideas, how about a fiberglass front bumper painted the same as the body, then add a polished aluminum grill, and some ghost flames :o

Very nice technical work, and I agree with the above quote from Jon. The lines of the car would lead me to perform slight chopping job as well.
Keep up the nice professional work....great job!

'84ElCaminoSS 12-30-2003, 01:29 PM Okay, I went back to the model after looking at pictures of my car and reworked some parts. I dropped the roof 2 inches and brought the wheel openings up higher to where they should be. I also added the paint scheme that I have been considering. It's just a dark red metallic with black above the beltline. I also had those flamed Bowties made for my hood scoop in vinyl and will later have them used as templates to be painted and clear coated. I'll try a billet grill and fiberglass bumper as well, though I think I will leave those parts stock. I am seriously considering shaved door handles too, I never really liked the tacked-on 5th gen handles. And BTW, I just forgot to add the marker lights. Though it would look really nice, I live in a town where I would get busted on a daily basis for not having them... :(
Thanks for the comments!

motorbreth 12-30-2003, 01:49 PM is it missing the hood ornament on purpose?? i never liked the stand up ones anyway. sharp lookin car, good job.
ElkyPete 12-30-2003, 02:55 PM I like them both but I like the second one better! :D
That is so cool! 8-) You've got a lot of talant. Now make your Elky look like that. :D Or better yet ... mine! Just kidding, I like mine just like I planned it.
You Da Man!
Camino80 12-30-2003, 05:45 PM Hi Kris, Looks great. I agree with Dan on the billet tubular grill. I think it would smooth out the front. JMHO. 8)
83choochoo 12-30-2003, 06:25 PM Hello Kris, awesome job, i also wish you would do one of a choo choo.
Tommy 12-30-2003, 06:48 PM Black out the grill & door handle. Very nice work indeed.
Caveman49 12-30-2003, 07:56 PM Excellent work :wow: Both versions are sweeeeet..... If you ever get around to doing a 74 Elky (all black) please let me know.
Jims78elky 12-30-2003, 11:12 PM Hello Kris, I've been a fan of your work for a long time, its nice to see you here, and also at pro-touring,very cool  Just wanted to say outstanding work on the el camino model, the rims remind me of what i first had on my elky right after i first got it,the color and stance on the model is perfect, great looking cowl hood, would you be using a bed cover for the model? I think a flush mount would give it a nice clean finished look..just my $0.02. Keep up the great work, and hey you better get those guys at G.M. crackin and get you on there payroll soon! see you over at pt.com :D
Poltergeist 12-31-2003, 12:17 AM Kris is this going to be a daily driver? If so I would not recommend removing the door handles. You could paint them body color to help hide them or put on some from another car that recessed a little more. I had my handles smoothed slightly and then painted body color. And you might want to leave one of the key locks also. On a weekend car it's one thing, but a daily sooner or later a remote will fail or the receiver will and then getting in would be real fun. I only had the passenger one removed from mine. The drivers with be covered with a 'smooth lock' cover that is painted body color to help hide it. But if my electronics fail I can peel it off and and use a key and then stick it back on.
On the side markers you could recess the rears the same as the fronts already are. This would help smooth the rear quarters and still keep you legal.
Keep up the great work. 8)
Tommy 12-31-2003, 11:17 AM It needs a factory SS front spoiler. Did I mention a blacked out grill & handles. I painted my handles body color & they look good.
70ELCO 12-31-2003, 11:48 AM That El Camino looks so real I swear you could jump in it and start it up! 8O
The second rendering is killer!! 8)
I love the paint theme and choice of colors. The cowl hood/w bowtie graphic just adds to the muscle look effect.
The only suggestions I have is also in the grill area. To be honest I'm not a big fan of the stock looking front ends on these years. I really do think they need a little help with some after market trick stuff to jazz it up.
As you know from your other retro renderings of the Camaro, you used some cool up to date front grill work as well as a cool newer Chevy bow-tie logo in the middle of the grill. I think that theme here would also finish off the El Camino very well!
Over all another OUTSTANDING job!!
Kris, your still the man in the graphic's world! Have a great New Year and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the new year!

gr8ridejester 01-14-2004, 09:44 AM Kris,
If you're planning to keep the origional front grill, you may consider either painting it the same color as the dark red metallic or Duplicolor has a paint called "Instant Chrome" which would give it a custom look. I do a bit of design work myself...on roads and websites. I wish I had the time to render my own Elky. I have several drawings of what I want to do. Oh, another suggestion...if you're going to do the two tone paint, a thin pin-stripe separating the two colors is always nice. The light grey/silver at the bottom of the lower panels would work.
camino81 01-14-2004, 11:13 AM nice lookin model, i noticed that you had no rearview mirror on the door not sure if that was suppose to be like that or not.
n1earnhrt 01-18-2004, 05:06 PM I love your rendition and the fact that you kept the origenal front bumper
and I was wandering how you got started in 3d renditions
z28evans 01-21-2004, 02:49 PM VERY NICE :-D
I do some 3d work with 3d max ( i do accident reconstruction and i make videos for some court cases). I've toyed around with some of my cars - but nothing this good ( i also use photomodeler - another fun program).
Anychance that you would send me a copy of the el co's file to play with?
My site: www.z28evans.com with some elco stuff

Agree! Love 'em both, especially the second, but the front-end needs "something". It may be paint or the choo-choo route, but the front is the only thing keeping it from being TOTALLY awesome.
Keep 'em coming!!
Trout Camino 01-23-2004, 12:13 AM Holy geeze! That's bitchin!
A few questions:
What program do you use?
Do you have a 78/79 model for sale?
How much do you charge?
I've been looking to get my El rendered so I can shop sponsors. Sadly nobody (until now) was rendering 5th gens so I was going to try and do it myself (I just downloaded Solid Works 2003). Is this stuff easy to learn, or should I pay a professional like yourself? If you're interested in maybe trading out some stereo gear for a rendering shoot me an e-mail, I work for Rockford Fosgate.
80elcamino 01-24-2004, 08:04 PM What prog you usin' Maya ,3DsMAX or XSI...what?
i play with those and it's nice to see someone elses work!
'84ElCaminoSS 01-24-2004, 08:22 PM I use XSI most of the time. Before I learned XSI I used 3DS Max 5 and Rhino, which are also great programs. I went to school for XSI and am self-taught in MAX and Rhino. I learned how to model cars on my own time, and school time when I could sneak it in (I always got yelled at though.)
James, the file wouldn't work in any other program as it would only export to *.xsi format. Sorry. :-(

joe'80 4spd 01-24-2004, 08:23 PM PHAT RIDE! (second pic) I like the black hood scoop with the flamed bowties.
80elcamino 01-24-2004, 08:28 PM thanx for the quick responce. i've work a little with rhino but mostly maya 5 and bryce 5. you can see some of my work at webwiz.deviantart.com.
P.S. also self taught {it's the only way}

z28evans 01-25-2004, 11:57 AM No problem 8-)
I'm self taught in max also - some long nights at work 8O
I like your camaro work also !
'84ElCaminoSS 01-25-2004, 12:45 PM Thanks, I think the fact that I can do Camaros has been great as they seem to be the hottest classics right now, not to mention the ride-of-choice in the Pro-Touring scene. I've also done Chevelles and Mustangs as well as some trucks/SUVs for SEMA.
Kris
Poltergeist 01-25-2004, 05:12 PM Kris I wouldn't mind seeing the work you did on the Chevelles if there's some place I can see them.
