I have a 68 el camino with drum brakes all round. I have been offered a complete standard set of discs and calipers from a 2001 C5 corvette. How much trouble would it be to fit these to my elk. I was going to buy a kit from Summit anyway but this would save a heap of cash. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You could almost as easily use brakes from any F-body from '98-02. They are often called LS1 brakes. They are basically the same as C5 'vette brakes, but the casting method for the caliper is a little different. Point is, the LS1 brakes are probably cheaper for parts: rotors, pads, calipers. They can be had pretty cheap. I know this because I'm going to be doing an LS1 brake swap on my '89 Camaro as soon as my current pads are shot.

The reason I was going to use C5 parts was that a set were available on Ebay and although LSI parts are reasonably priced in America over here in England they are more expensive. Would l need to use a disc brake spindle. This is not to much of a problem as i would like to use 2in drop spindles anyway.

I've heard of people doing the corvette swap successfully, I believe you need the spindle and maybe some bracket, but you should have that if you have the whole set. I knew a website that had the procedure but I can't quite find it again.

I did C5s on my 82. Take a look at my page about it. While the spindles are different the basic idea should be the same.

Thank for speedy replies guys but I have now bought a 98 LS1 Camaro and hope to be able to use the brake parts from this. It has what looks like a 10 bolt rear axle and as mine has a 12 bolt l shall try to transplant the rears to this. The front has different shape and size spindles but with a bit of enginuity l am sure l acn sort it. Any other info would be much appreciated.
