Hey everyone, I am soooo grateful I geeked out and just found this great site. Because see, I have a BIG immediate issue. I just bought my lifted 81 elky and was told it had an issue with a bushing on the 6" lift on the front end. It knocked a bit and I was told to fix that soon but it drives fine except the knock which I found was resolved while coming to an idle, by moving from drive to neutral. I realize that this was just a quick fix and a mechanic told mne that it was fine u8ntil i could get the truck into the shop and order the bushung. But will stress alittle bit ion the gear box. Okqay that said. It JUST DIED on the freeway. With a loud strange noise. No wheel loss of control, not drop of the suspension which i was worried about if i did drive it to much before fixing that. I have the bushing ordered and intended to get in to the shop next week.
NOW I looked after moving to the shoulder quickly and saw a long piece come from the bottom of the car. I am super green on mechanics, io know i have to learn and am eager too with this car. But I am thinking the drive shaft? Drive train? But what could that piece be. When comning to a final stop in the dark. I noticed that the car wouldn't go into any gear. And when I tried to return it after starting it and trying to get in gear abnd move it over more that when i moved back to park i heard a hard clicking sound and uimmediately turned it off. It is now sitting on the off ramp, and won't go into gear. Before letting my buddy come out and tow it so i don't have to pay for that too, I wanted to make certain that it would be able to roll on all fours. Or has this piece effected the drive of the back wheels which rolled fine to a stop on velocity alone but what the *@#! do iI know right? HELP I am going back soon to be with her and either sit there all night so she doesn't get towed by CHP or if answers here come in soon and it feels okay for my buddy to tow me front end up with his truck I will do that. I NEED HELP thanks !!!! :help:

It is probably too late to help but it sounds like you dropped the drive shaft.
It will have to be disconnected from the rear end before towing.

By any chance are you in Yuma, and the elky brown?

Yup. Sounds like a driveshaft to me too.

The lift probably extended the rear end a bit and exxagerated the wear on the u-joints and tailshaft pieces.

Call AAA to take it home on a flatbed.

Before repairing the obvious broken/missing parts, take some measurements. Likely you'll need the driveshaft lengtened a little and rebalanced. Maybe a new bushing and seal in the tranny's tailshaft too.

Ouch. Sounds like your "custom car lessons" are beginning soon enough.

Wish you well.
