ok guys i need ur help. i just got a 72 elky thats been in alaska its whole life for 1200 bones. its been sitting for the last 15 years but has been run around some (the last tags were from 93) well it fires right up and suprisingly it runs pretty well. its got a holley dp, older edelbrock air gap intake with a scorpion on it and headers. dont know much else about the motor but it rips. (smokes the tires across an intersection) the body is rough but who cares its a hooptie! th400 3 speed works well. OK so heres my problem. the other day a wierd rattle started. it almost sounds like the dash ratlleing but its coming from the floor right on the trany hump. i can feel the rattle in the gas peddle while im driving as well. at first i thought it might be the driveshaft or a bad ball joint but it does it sometimes while its not moving. also today when i drove to class it didnt do it but after i got out it did it the whole rest of the day. could it be cause it was cold? i think it might be the tranny or engine rubbing against the firewall or the floor. if you guys have any ideas let me know. im new to this site and i just got the car a few days ago and i love it. it even passed the im test! thanks guys

Hey Chris, Welcome to the site bud. Congrats on your getting an Elky, and a good year too. Can't really help other than maybe a front u-joint, warped drive shaft, loose tranny linkage, or inspection cover on tranny. There's not much else at that point in the tunnel. But vibrations can carry a long ways, could be coming from many areas. Good luck with it.

thanks mark, im gonna go lift it up and see if i can figure it out when i get outa class tonight. i think it might be the exaust rubbing against the body. that would explain it rattling when its in park as well even though it doesnt do it nearly as much. do you know much about replacing rear qaurters? i have bad cancer on one. its not something im gonna do right this minute but i really love this ride and if theres a chance i can save it i'd like too. is it a very hard process or not that bad. i know some rear quarters can be a nightmere. thanks again and happy crusin'

I'l take a guess:
Exhaust pipe or header flange or connector etc hitting the firewall?
Loose bolts on the torque converter?
Marbles in the ashtray?
I'll quit now.............

Oh yeh? Cool, Wasilla here, I work in Los Anchorage tho. Were you driving your El at all this winter? I remember seeing someone out there in a beat up 3rd gen this winter. It was flat black, January or so in the middle of a huge snowfall. Looked to be doing just fine tho in all the snow and ice.
These guys have already given the best solutions I can think of... Have you pulled the cover and checked all the torque convertor bolts are tight? Noticed any areas where the exhaust is routed closely to the anything?

i'll check the tc bolts tonight. that kinda makes sense sence it doesnt do it when its cold. i just got it a week ago but i did get it from the valley. i dont think u saw it though cause it was sitting for 15 years. its dark blue with big stripes down the side and over the hood. i'll try to put a picture on soon. do you guys ever meet up up here and stuff. that would be fun to organize something like that with eveyone from AK well im off to north carolina for a wedding for the weekend. have a good one
