The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) should be on the Certification Label on your driver's door jam.
If not, I've got an owner's manual that says the 1978 GVWR range is 4424-4674 lbs.
I've got an '82 manual that says 4500 lbs maximum.
So, 4500 lbs seems to be the "working average" for 5th gen El Caminos and GMC Caballeros.

Trucks with Gross Vehicle Weights are maximum Loaded vehicle weight. Not the coub weight, how much your car weighs. My 80 El Camino has a max payload of 1000lbs. So subtract max payload from G.V.W. =curb weight. About 3500 pounds or so.
Or...You can go to the dump and drive across their scales and get an exact weight which will be alot more accurate than the tag in the door jam.

Right! Sorry about that, my figures are Gross Weight maxiums, Elky plus load.
1980 V8 Elky was curb weight of 3238. Don't have a weight listed for the six cylinder, but it wouldn't be much different from the V8 weight.
