Pete, I think it's a 71 rear end, not a 72.

KD = 2.73 non-posi
C = Buffalo
279 = made on the 279th day of 1971

Using all three letters (KDC) and the Hollanders exchange manual 54th edition, it comes out as a 1974, twelve bolt cover, 3.40 non-locking series 10 van & bus differential built on the 279th day. This of course is dependant upon all three letters being stamped side by side and and no space between the "D" and the "C".

So basically it is something between a 2.73:1 and a 3.40:1?

The number on the tube appear just like I typed them in with the exception of a "1" after all that. It actually has

KDC 279 1 <<- Just like that. It was pulled out of a 1972 El Camino but I don't know if it is original. I needed one to put back in my 72. It is a 12 Bolt and it doesn't look like it has been welded on (to change the mounting) it all looks original. So.....

Which one is correct? Is it a 2.73 or a 3.40? :-(

The 1 is the shift it was made on.

KD = 2.73 non-posi
C = Buffalo

1 = 1st shift

Do you doubt me Pete? :rolleyes:

Let see I've done that before..... and was wrong.

I need a rear for the 72 now so no matter, its a 12 and it fits and I can get new gears. Its not like its a running vehicle anyway. :D
